Pettitte leaves game Friday night with stiffness in back
The Yankees’ old and less-than-reliable ace (he isn’t really their ace) Andy Pettitte left Friday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians with stiffness in his back. He thinks he strained his back at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington in between starts.
“I guess it’s a little bit of old age,” Pettitte said. “That’s all I can tell you. I literally wasn’t doing anything. I felt great working out, I lifted my legs and it was just one of those freak accidents.”
Pettitte left in the sixth inning on just 84 pitches, but he still got the win to improve to 5-1 on the season with a 4.10 ERA.
“We knew about it early in the game, but he said he was OK,” Manager Joe Girardi said. “I just decided from what I saw, I didn’t like it, and it was hard. He was trying to grit it out, and that’s what Andy always does.”
There is a good chance that he will never play again. Most are hoping that he can lead a normal life after baseball.
