J.R. Smith goes to jail

NBA/In June 2007, Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith ran through a stop sign going 67 mph and collided with another car.  At impact, Smith and his friend Andre Bell were ejected from the car.  Bell later died from his injuries.

Yesterday Smith was sentenced to 90 days in prison for causing the auto accident that killed his friend.  However, Judge Debra Gelson will suspend 60 days of the sentence if Smith performs 500 hours of community service visiting sick children in the hospital.  Gelson also suspended his license for two years.

“It’s been unbearable to deal with,” Smith said to the court.  “I am deeply sorry. I never intended for this to happen. It tears me up that it went down like that.”

Does this put the Stallworth court decision into perspective?
