Bruntlett turns unassisted triple play

Phillies utility infielder Eric Bruntlett is used to making the third out of an inning. It tends to come when he grounds into a double play or something. But this time it was a little different. Bruntlett became just the second player in MLB history to end a game with an unassisted triple play as the Phillies downed the Mets 9-7 at Citifield.

“I didn’t know how to react. I didn’t know what to do,” Bruntlett said. “The ninth inning was wild. The whole game it seemed was strange.”

Bruntlett, who was 3-for-5 at the plate on Sunday with a run scored, was playing 2B for Chase Utley. With runners at first and second and none out in the ninth, Jeff Francoeur hit a line shot up the middle for what appeared to be a single into centerfield. But both Mets baserunners were stealing and Bruntlett was in perfect position. He caught the ball, doubled up Luis Castillo and tagged Dan Murphy for the final out.

“What a bizarre ending. I don’t know what happened there. The game’s over, so I’m happy with that,” closer Brad Lidge said. “That was pretty exciting. That’s definitely not the way you draw it up.”

Bruntlett gets abused in Philly for his weak bat, but he was phenomenal against the Mets on Sunday. OTR gives Bruntlett a big, “Good for youuuuu!”

As for Lidge….he got lucky. His play will get the Phillies bounced from the playoffs awfully quickly.
