UFL makes poor decisions

UFL 300x300 UFL makes poor decisionsLet me first say that we are actually pulling for the UFL. It’s a fledgling league with high-quality coaches and high-quality players (compared to some of the other alternate football leagues for sure) and we’d love to see it develop into a farm system for the NFL. But why the stupid decisions?

First, what’s the deal with the uniforms? Why is it when someone tries to make an alternate pro football league, they have to have the ugliest, spaced-out jerseys and uniforms. White numbers on silver? Yeah, it’s really easy to tell who is who. Idiotic. Just make the uniforms classy and normal (and that includes regular, basic colors) and present yourself as a real league. I don’t need stupid, over-the-top uniforms to watch. All they do is remind me that I’m not watching the NFL.

Secondly, since when did the refs need new outfits? Black and white stripes is old and tired? If you haven’t seen them (and judging by the ratings, you haven’t), the refs wear black pants with red, short-sleeved collared shirts. They look like Circuit City employees. I can’t tell whether the ref is spotting the ball, or explaining to J.P. Losman the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rates.

And how about the marketing? You would think that the UFL would want to get the word out so that people could, you know, watch it. We had no idea it was on and accidentally stumbled upon it while flipping. We are huge football fans here at OTR and would like to actually check the stupid league out. But we never know when it’s on. And the fact that it’s on a channel we never check (VS.) unless we are looking for hockey, makes it even tougher to find.

UFL, you have a decent product. You have many, many former NFL players who can still play. Why the stupid stuff? Fans just want to see good football. I don’t know of anyone who stopped watching the NFL because they were sick of the boring uniforms and stodgy ref outfits.
