Cliff Lee to start Game 1
By Micah Warren on Oct 25, 2009 in Baseball
Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has announced that Cliff Lee will be his starter for Game 1 of the World Series Wednesday. This comes a complete surprise to everyone who hasn’t watched the playoffs so far and Cole Hamels in particular.
So far in the postseason, Lee has a 2-0 record, 0.74 ERA and 0.70 WHIP.
If Hamels could be reached for comment, he’d probably say something in a high-pitched voice.

Don’t hate on Cole. If the Phillies are to win this, he’ll need to come up with 8 quality innings meaning low pitch count and less than 2 runs. Lee can win 2, but he can’t win 4. Martinez is a wild card no matter what sugar coating you put on it. The rest of the staff amounts to a bullpen appearance in the first inning.

I admit I’m digging into Cole a little bit. He hasn’t pitched very well (hasn’t been terrible) and he’s acting like more and more of a baby with his comments and his showing up his teammates on the field. He needs to reel it in.
