The number-one ranked Florida Gator’s will be playing without their defensive captain for the first half of Saturday’s game. Coach Urban Meyers has decided to bench linebacker Brandon Spikes for trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in last weekend’s game.
The incident was brought to Meyers attention Sunday night and then again Monday morning by team personnel. After reviewing a tape of Spikes ramming his hand into Ealey’s mask and wiggling it around, Meyers decided to take action. The SEC has backed the decision.
“I don’t condone that,” Meyer said. “I understand what goes on on the football [field], but there’s no place for that. We’re going to suspend Brandon for the first half of the Vanderbilt game. I spoke with him. That’s not who he is. That’s not who we are. He got caught up in emotion.”
The game was emotionally charged from the start and overall five personal-foul penalties were given out. During the second quarter, officials warned both teams that things were getting out of control.
When asked about the game Monday, Tim Tebow replied, “I don’t think that we did anything in that game that they didn’t do.” We’re guessing that after the game, they did lots of stuff Tim didn’t do.
