Macy’s picks Phillies to win
Well, maybe not. But they are ready to sell a boat-load of t-shirts if it happens.
As Philly fans went to work Monday with their heads hanging low after Sunday’s loss, they were surprised to find a 3/4 page ad congratulating the Philadelphia Phillies on winning back-to-back World Series titles.
The Macy’s ad, printed on the back of Monday’s front section, featured a t-shirt with the Phillies logo, the Commissioner’s Trophy and the phrase “Back To Back World Series Champions.” The Yankees are currently up 3-1 in the series.
I get that companies create two ads so as soon as the winner is declared they can jump in. My real question is for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Does no one in your advertising department watch sports? No one caught the mistake as the papers came rolling off the line? It’s nearly the entire page! Come on.
Maybe Macy’s also realized that the Inquirer couldn’t be trusted because the fine print at the bottom read “Advertised items may not be at your local Macy’s.”
