Arenas now facing jail time
Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas pled guilty on Friday to a felony count of carrying a pistol without a license. We aren’t completely sure how you just disregard the fact that those unlicensed pistols were brought into a workplace and brandished, but whatever.
So, Arenas will be sentenced on March 26th and, as part of the plea deal, prosecutors will not ask for more than six months in jail. This is great except the judge has already acknowledged that he is not bound to any terms of a plea deal. So if he wants, he can put Arenas away for up to five years. Let’s hope he doesn’t want.
Arenas is currently free after agreeing to surrender his passport and not possess any weapons (something he wasn’t supposed to do in the first place).

The NBA aspect of all this might not be as kind as the legal system. Arenas is currently suspended indefinitely and the Wizards are within their rights to rip up the remaining four years on his $111 million contract. Whether they do so or not remains to be seen, but they’ve hardly been supportive of him through all this and we can’t say we blame them. Dude, you brought handguns into a locker room….what the hell is wrong with you?
“Gilbert used extremely poor judgment and is ultimately responsible for his own actions,” the team-issued statement said on Friday.
Doesn’t sound like they have any interest in honoring the rest of his contract to us. And based on how sensitive David Stern is when it comes to the image of the NBA, we can’t imagine that he’ll be very nice when it’s time to decide Arenas’ fate.
