NFL Network to rebroadcast Super Bowl III
On Saturday night, probably around 8pm or 9pm or another time, NFL Network will rebroadcast in its entirety Super Bowl III. Sweet.
This is the game that gave the AFL legitimacy and was the catalyst for the merger. Remember? New York Jets? Baltimore Colts? Joe Namath? The guarantee?
If you don’t remember then you probably don’t watch football and should watch ice dancing on NBC if that is indeed what NBC is broadcasting on Saturday night.
It could be a crime show where an unruly cop bends the rules to catch a bad guy on a hunch. Halfway through the show, the chief says to the maverick law agent in his office, “oh and Thompson…..if you are investigating the Sanchez murder, you needn’t bother coming back.” And then agent Thompson takes one last drag of his cigarette, flicks it into an ashtray from across the room without looking and exhales, “it’s different this time, chief. Now they are messing with my family.” And then he goes rogue and starts roughing up the locals to get the information he needs, even though it’s against protocol. And then in the end the cop is in a wild shootout with the killer in an old meat factory or something but he’s down to his last bullet and he says something clever like “if I ain’t got luck, I ain’t got nothin’,” then he shoots a ricochet off an old vat filled with poison and it hits the perp and he dies. But the cop didn’t escape unscathed. No, he got shot in the arm and was bleeding badly. And then they are outside and it’s daytime again all of a sudden and the chief comes up to the rogue agent as the ambulance is there and they are attending to his arm while his wife and kids just showed up out of the blue and the chief says something great like “I don’t know why I ever doubted you, Thomspon. I think it’s high time I buy you a cold one.” And then they all laugh and then they show scenes from next week’s episode.
But anyway, yeah. The NFL Network is going to be replaying Super Bowl III. Spoiler Alert, the Jets win 16-7.
Any chance the NFL network will run some of the other AFL championship games of the 60s (Dallas’s 2OT win; the Bills championships of 64 and 65; the Chargers’s big win over the Pats in 63; the Jets beating the Raiders to get to Super Bowl 3?). After watching the first three episodes of “Full Color Football” I’m really interested in watching complete AFL games.
