Asomugha and Jets tampering?
Oakland Raiders all-world CB Nnamdi Asomugha says that he’d like to play for the New York Jets along side all-world CB Darrelle Revis. That’s fine. He also said that he’s spoken to head coach Rex Ryan about it. That’s not fine. That’s tampering.
“Me and Revis have been talking to Rex to try to do something,” Asomugha said. “You may see us in the future. There’s a little bit of talk going on. Either he’s coming to Oakland or something else will happen.”
“Me and him have talked about it, but I can’t really control that situation,” Revis said, instead of using the correct pronouns of “he and I.” “I don’t know if he can either.”
Here’s the skinny. Or the rub, if you will. Rex Ryan cannot speak to a player on another team who is under contract regarding the possibility that said player could possibly join his team. That’s tampering.
Here is the rule on tampering that we copied and pasted from Profootballtalk.com.
“If a club is contacted by a player (or his representative) who is under contract to or whose negotiating rights are held by another club, and such player had not been given permission to deal with other clubs, or such player is not in a permissible negotiating period under the terms of an operative collective bargaining agreement, then the contacted club is prohibited from talking or otherwise dealing with the player or his representative, and the contacted club must immediately report such contact to the owner or operating head of the club which holds the player’s rights.”
Asomugha is under contract for two more years. Oops.
