Bears hire Martz as offensive coordinator

MikeMartz 230x300 Bears hire Martz as offensive coordinatorThe Chicago Bears have hired former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz to be their offensive coordinator, according to Brad Bigg’s Twitter page. While Martz was low on the list of candidates, the Bears had little choice when even Emanuel Lewis, Rich Kotite, and three different members of Menudo said they weren’t interested.

QB Jay Cutler has the arm strength to succeed in Martz’s offense, which likes deep and intermediate routes. But Martz does like to throw the ball. And every time Cutler throws the ball it’s a recipe for disaster. Cutler’s yards per attempt should go up, but we think that his INT’s will too.

Fantasy alert: Downgrade Greg Olsen if you didn’t already learn that from drafting him the last two years. Martz doesn’t have a history of having a tight end with a big role in his offense.

We think too many people will make too big of a deal about this for the Bears, but we don’t see them getting any better from adding Martz. If he was so great and easy to work with (he’s not, we’ve spoken to people who have worked with him and said he’s a Grade A ass), then why was he out of a job last year? We think this is Martz’s last chance as an OC.
