Pagan settles on a contract with the Mets
New York Mets outfielder Angel Pagan has avoided arbitration with the Mets by agreeing to a one-year, $1.45 million contract with the club. GM Omar Minaya says that the centerfielder’s job is open to competition until Carlos Beltran gets back (and don’t count on that happening any time soon).
Once the club and player exchanged figures – $1.8 million for Pagan, $1.275 for the Mets – the middle ground was easy to find. Surprisingly, it’s a big win for the Mets to get Pagan signed. They actually could really use him. He only hit six bombs, but did hit .306 last year for them. Those kinds of numbers could have earned him team MVP. Maybe they did?

Look for Pagan to beat out Gary Matthews, Jr. to keep that centerfield spot warm.
