Luger was terrified of the track at Vancouver Games
Nodar Kumaritashvili, the 21-year old luger who was killed in a training accident before the Olympic Games even began, was reportedly terrified of the dangerous luge track.
“He called me before the Olympics, three days ago, and he said, ‘Dad, I’m scared of one of the turns,’ ” David Kumaritashvili said in an interview at his house on Sunday.
Kumaritashvili was killed when he raced around a dangerous turn at 90 mph and tossed off of the track and into a support beam. The track is well known for being extremely fast – it’s the fastest in the world – and very dangerous.
“I said, Put your legs down on the ice to slow down, but he said if he started the course he would finish it. … He was brave,” Kumaritashvili’s father said.
The International Luge Federation has said that Kumaritashvili is to blame and not any “deficiencies in the track,” saying that the luger “did not compensate properly to make the correct entrance” into the curve where he went off the track at the Whistler Sliding Centre.
If it had absolutely nothing to do with the track, why are they having the men now start from the women’s starting position, all the while implementing many more safety measures near that turn?
