38-year old Posada has no plans to retire
New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada seems like he’s been the Yankees catcher for the last 20 years. It hasn’t been quite that long, but he’s been squatting behind home plate for the Yankees full-time since 1998 (he was up in 1995 and caught 60 games in 1997, but we aren’t counting that), when the Yankees crushed the league and made a mockery of the World Series against the Padres. At some point, you’d think that kneeling and standing and kneeling and standing would wear him out, right?
“I am going to make it tough, that’s the way I was brought up,” Posada said. “We got a lot of talent, but I am going to make it tough for them. I don’t want to go away. I am having fun and enjoy playing. To tell you the truth, they are going to really have to rip [the uniform] off me.”
Posada hit .285 with 22 homers and 81 RBIs last year, which is pretty good for a catcher not named Joe Mauer.
“I see myself catching next year. I don’t know what is going to happen beyond next year,” said Posada, who can be a free agent after the 2011 season. “I think I can still do it. I am happy and I am fine.”
It looks like 24-year old Francisco Cervelli will back up Posada this year, and they have a couple other young kids coming up as well in Austine Romine and Jesus Montero, but they are 21 and 20 respectively. So it doesn’t look like anyone is going to be snagging Posada’s job right this second, but that’s fine because he doesn’t seem willing to give it up anyway.
