Flyers make some moves to clear cap space
The Philadelphia Flyers have put goaltender Ray Emery on the long-term injured list and placed winger Riley Cote on waivers. The moves will clear up about $2 million in cap space so that they can hopefully make a move.
The Flyers now have $2.8 million space with which to swing a deal. Sources tell the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi that the Flyers are interested in Los Angeles’ Alexander Frolov, Columbus’ Raffi Torres and Ottawa’s Matt Cullen. Ray Whitney will be a free agent after the year and supposedly is looking for $4 million a year. That’s out of the Flyers budget so forget him.
The Flyers added Emery in the offseason to bolster their goalie spot and he’s given them next to nothing. Emery is 16-11-1 with 2.64 GAA and .905 save percentage. That is on top of all of his injuries and it’s just not good enough. We would guess that the season will be in Michael Leighton’s hands at this point. He’s been excellent at times, but hardly someone you’d trust with a Stanley Cup run.
