Peppers will be pricey
Tons of teams are believed to be interested in free-agent-to-be Julius Peppers (wait until the bidding starts, tons will fall off very quickly). But, you can bet that his price tag will be through the roof when free agency starts.
It only takes one team to make him “worth it” and that team could very well be the Washington Redskins. An NFL source tells the Chicago Tribune that Pepper’s price tag could be in the neighborhood of $18 million per year with $40 million guaranteed.
We’ll say it right now: He is not remotely worth that kind of dough.
For a guy who even had his own teammates question his desire to play? No thanks. If the Redskins want to do that and then have him switch positions, go for it. We don’t think the Eagles need to be involved if the bidding gets that high. We know it’s not our money and there is an uncapped year (with very few people having any clue how that will impact contracts in the coming years), but that’s a serious drain on your resources when you have to field a 53-man team.
“He is a better athlete and has superior skills,” an NFC general manager told the Tribune. “But he doesn’t have near the motor and doesn’t play as hard down in and down out and week in and week out.”
Is that worth $40 million guaranteed?
We’re guessing he’ll probably end up getting something like $12-$14 million with $35 million guaranteed, but that’s just a guess and won’t change our position on whether or not the Eagles should get him. The Vikings traded for Jared Allen and then broke the bank on him, but he’s been worth it. That’s the exception to us. Jevon Kearse was not remotely worth it in 2004. We don’t think Albert Haynesworth has been worth it so far.
The Eagles really need another pass rusher opposite Trent Cole, but it’s not looking like Peppers will be the way to go. Way too much money for a guy with a questionable motor and who just turned 30 in January. Are we starting to sound like Joe Banner.
