Redskins release a bunch
The Washington Redskins have put a few heads on the chopping block as expected. They have cut guard Randy Thomas, wide receiver Antwaan Randle El (thank god) and special teamer/backup RB Rock Cartwright.
At age 34 and coming off of a torn triceps, you had to figure they weren’t going to pay Thomas the $3 million he was about to be owed. Also, with Shanahan in town, the Redskins are going to a zone blocking scheme, which Thomas just wouldn’t fit into.
Randle El is a no brainer. They signed him to way too much money in 2006 to begin with, mainly because he was the best WR on the free agent market that year. Little did the Redskins know that that year’s free agent crop was absolutely horrific and they essentially signed the tallest midget. Randle El was due a $4.25 million salary and a $6.25 million roster bonus. Even Dan Snyder ain’t paying that.
Cartwright was due $1.5 million and we don’t think anyone should pay that. He got his kick returning duties taken away from him in 2009 and he’s really just a third-string RB at this point (and at any point).
UPDATE: They have also cut CB Fred Smoot and supposedly will be cutting Ladell Betts too once an injury settlement can be reached. All these moves are also known as “cleaning up Vinny Cerrato’s mess” moves.
