Giants sign Rolle for five years
There have been a lot of signings on this first day of NFL free agency and many have been cases of dudes just getting too much money. We think this is one of those cases, but the New York Giants really had to so something to upgrade their safety position.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants locked up former Arizona Cardinal Antrel Rolle for five years.
“Filed to ESPN: Giants reach agreement with S Antrel Rolle — 5 year deal for $37 million, including $15 million gtd,” he tweets.
$37 million with $15 million guaranteed? Eek.
We like Rolle, but don’t love him. He’s a playmaker with good cover skills, but his tackling can be awful and he isn’t always where he is supposed to be. But that said, he’s a huge upgrade for the G-men at safety.
Kenny Phillips has shown promise for the Giants, but he’s coming off of microfracture surgery and has a degenerative knee condition. He might be the key to all of this. If he’s healthy (big if), the Giants could go from having a wretched safety group to a formidable one.
