Rays in serious talks with Blalock?
Remember when Texas Rangers 1B used to be really good? Well, he stinks now and the lack of interest for his services on the MLB market is proof of that. But, John Heyman of SI tweets that the Tampa Bay Rays could be seriously interested in adding him to their roster.
“hank blalock is in serious talks with the #rays, who’ve been looking for a hitter for a while,” he tweets.
Blalock hit a paltry .234 last year. But surprisingly, of the few balls that his bat actually touched and went somewhere that didn’t record an out, 25 went over the wall. So he does still have some power, even if he’s not the guy you want at the plate to try to keep a rally alive.
He’s only 29-years old, but he’s had surgery on his fingers and that could be a problem. He’d most likely be a DH, but he could probably give Carlos Pena a rest at first base from time to time (again, depends on the fingers). According to what we’ve read (and it all must be true) most clubs don’t want to offer him much more than a minor league contract, so he should be thrilled to be talking to the Rays.
