Who will be the Yankees fifth starter?
As the world champion New York Yankees entered this spring, one of the big questions was who was going to hold the fifth spot in their starting rotation. Two big names immediately came to mine, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain. Both have had success in the bullpen, but both possess potential starter’s stuff. So, who will be the guy?
“I don’t think anyone has pulled ahead,” pitching coach Dave Eiland said. “Ace has thrown the ball extremely well, but as of right now, if we had to pick, we really couldn’t pick one. They haven’t been out there long enough.”
When he says “Ace,” he’s talking about Alfredo Aceves. And there is also Sergio Mitre who has pitched extremely well. Both have been pretty god damn good this spring, but could either be picked over Chamberlain or Hughes?
“When you say results, it’s not just numbers,” Eiland said. “It’s the quality of each pitch, working ahead in the count, first-pitch strikes, stuff, command. How economical are they? Are the outs hard-hit? You can go out and pitch a few innings, give up lasers all over the field but walk away up no hits and no runs. That doesn’t mean you made a lot of good pitches.”
OTR thinks that the coaches are going to say whatever they can to increase competition. Competition makes everyone better, that’s just the truth. But in the end, are they really going to go with someone other than Hughes or Chamberlain? Their upside is enormous (not so much with Joba these days) and as long as their bullpen is strong, they have no need to send both to the pen.
