Reyes could play opening day?
New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya refused to rule out SS Jose Reyes for opening day. Reyes has been sidelined with an overactive thyroid for weeks and is trying to work his way back.
“We haven’t ruled it out yet, no,” Minaya said Sunday. “I’m guessing the next step is going to be live BP (batting practice). He looks good. He wants to bring it to the next level.”
He added that he didn’t think it would be wise to rush his leadoff man back into the lineup “just to have him for one game.”
Manager Jerry Manuel talked to reporters about what Reyes has to do to get back out there.
“Today on the turns, that’s a good sign,” said Manuel. “Every day he says he feels great, so we have to stay with the program that they have outlined for him. A lot of it is predicated on him, on how he feels the next day. The next part of that is the timing as a player, getting in the game, feeling the rhythm. This is a unique situation. We just kind of go on him.”
Everyone in the Mets organization is extremely anxious to get Reyes back on the baseball field so they can all find out what his next injury will be.
