Williams shows up to offseason workouts with well-deserved bonus
Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams has impressed a lot of people in Dallas since the team gave up first-, third- and fifth-round picks in 2008 to get him. 57 catches in just 25 games is nothing short of amazing. And he was rewarded recently by getting his $9.5 million bonus that he was guaranteed. We are sure Jerry Jones loved writing that check. He most likely made a fake throw-it-right-in-the-trash-can move right before he handed the signed check to his assistant so it could be mailed out.
But, Williams should at least get some very minor credit for showing up to voluntary offseason workouts this week.
“My biggest disappointment is not being able to help the team,” Williams said. “I felt like I didn’t do anything last year. I dropped balls and what not. I didn’t think my name would be on top of the drop list ever in my life. It was a humbling experience. It showed me I better get my life together.”
That would about sum it all up for Cowboys fans, who expected Williams to come in and be a true #1 receiver. The good news is at least someone emerged thanks to Miles Austin.
But the biggest problem for Williams seems to be that he isn’t on the same page as Tony Romo. Romo was sharp last year throwing to just about everyone except Williams. What’s that tell you? Yep, Williams would seem to be the problem.
“Of course if I throw to a guy in the game and he is tripping by not catching the ball I would lose confidence in him, too,” Williams told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He won’t say it publicly, but what quarterback wouldn’t lose trust. I’m going to try to get in good with him and be his buddy. You have to make plays in the game to get the ball and get plays drawn for you. I have to make plays.”
