Red Sox close to signing Beckett for $70 million

With the Red Sox not able to strike a deal in trading for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, it looks like they are moving on and negotiating with starting pitcher Josh Beckett.

According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Sox are close to signing the right-hander to a four-year, $70 million contract.  Heyman expects the announcement to come sometime next week.

Beckett went 17-6 with a 3.86 ERA and 199 strikeouts last year and will most likely be Boston’s Opening Day starter.
