Beltran to begin rehab assignment Thursday
According to SNY’s Brad Como on Twitter, New York Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran is set to begin a rehab start on Thursday. Beltran is fighting back from a surgically repaired right knee that he banged up last season.
“Beltran to begin rehab assignment on Thursday in Port St. Lucie,” Como tweets, repeating exactly what we just said.
GM Omar Minaya wanted to get the rehab started after seeing him workout in Florida on Monday.
“It gave me a lot of confidence,” Minaya said.
The Mets still see Beltran as a centerfielder, so when Beltran comes back, they can move Angel Pagan to one of the corners while still finding playing time for Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur.
“I’ve done it before,” Pagan said.
This could be quite a boost for the Mets, who would have to imagine getting Beltran back shortly after the All-Star break. It’d be like making a big mid-season trade without giving up a bunch of the prospects they don’t have.
