Could Carmelo Anthony be changing teams as well?
With Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, and Lebron James having all of their fun this 2010 offseason, it seems one player from the 2003 NBA Draft class has been left out of the party. Darko Milicic? Chris Kaman? Michael Sweetney? How about that Mr. Carmelo Anthony?
Yes, we’ll go with Carmelo Anthony.
Anthony’s option to opt out of his contract won’t be until June 30th, 2011, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing him change teams as well. The Denver Post is reporting that the Nuggets are frantically trying to sign Melo for a long-term deal to avoid all the free agency ruckus next offseason. I probably didn’t need to use frantically there, but you get the idea. Reportedly, there is a three-year, $65 million contract extension on the table.
But what if Melo decides to not sign the extension and opt out of his $17 million for 2011? Can Denver afford to let him walk without getting any type of compensation in return? That wouldn’t be smart. The Denver Post is indicating that the Nuggets might have to consider trading Melo during the season if they feel they will lose Anthony in free agency next season. Another interesting twist to the upcoming NBA season.
