Piniella to retire at the end of the season

LouPiniella 300x191 Piniella to retire at the end of the seasonThe New York Daily News has learned that former New York Yankees manager and current Chicago Cubs manager will retire at the end of the 2010 season. The 67-year old Piniella has endured two rough seasons after taking the club to the playoffs in the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

The disappointing Cubs are probably a big reason he’s done managing baseball. We would have to think that just sharing a clubhouse with Carlos Zambrano would be enough to make him quit. Dealing with Milton Bradley last year probably didn’t help either.

Piniella is in the last year of his contract so who knows if he is stepping away from the Cubs, or baseball altogether. It’s possible that the right offer could bring him out of retirement, but that’s just a guess.

Currently, the Cubbies are 10 1/2 games back in the weak NL Central.
