Raiders sign McClain
The Oakland Raiders have one less thing to worry about now as training camp looms. The team has announced that they have signed first-round pick Rolando McClain, who they took eighth overall out of Alabama.
Other than that, they don’t offer much more information. But, now they can go back to worrying about more important things, like how they plan to score points this year.
McClain won the Butkus Award last year as the nation’s top linebacker. He is now the third first-round pick to ink a deal. He joins Devin McCourty of the Patriots and Dez Bryant of the Cowboys. Jimmy Clausen signed with the Panthers, but he is most certainly not a first-round pick.
We would have to imagine that every GM in the league is terrified of McClain’s contract numbers. Oakland gave a butt-load of money to last year’s No. 7-overall pick Darrius Heyward-Bey. If they gave away the farm again, then that means every rookie who was taken around him will want big money too. Thanks, Oakland!
McClain is now free to pursue a life of religious fulfillment.
UPDATE: Adam Schefter has tweeted the numbers on the deal. “Numbers are in: Raiders first-round pick Rolando McClain signed a 5-year, $40 million contract that includes $23 million guaranteed.”
