Rays put Pena on the DL
The Tampa Bay Rays are in a heated battle with the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East. The last thing they need is to lose one of their serious power hitters. But, that’s what it looks like as the Rays have put Carlos Pena on the DL.
“#Rays are playing 1B Carlos Pena on the DL, retro to Aug. 1, and recalling relief p Dale Thayer.. Pena’s injury: plantar facia sprain,” tweets TBO_Rays.
Plantar facia sprains aren’t fun. Who knows how long Pena could really be out? As of now, the Rays are 0.5 games back of the Yankees, so they can’t afford to slide. And while they won’t miss Pena’s paltry .212 average, they will miss his 23 bombs.
Plus, the Boston Red Sox are six games behind the Yanks, but they start a four-game set with the pinstripes tonight. They could conceivably make this a three-horse race by the end of the weekend. Not having Kevin Youkilis won’t help at all, but they still have enough talent to cause problems.
