Mets want to void Rodriguez contract?
Updating a previous item, Jon Heyman of SI.com has learned that the New York Mets are looking into voiding the contract of their closer, Francisco Rodriguez.
“#mets are looking into voiding k-rod’s contract, si.com has learned. story up on site soon,” Heyman tweets.
The Mets probably feel like they have a case because Rodriguez’s torn thumb ligament came when he was busting up his girlfriend’s dad in the Citifield clubhouse last week. The incident cost him two games without pay. And now, he’ll miss even more time because he hurt himself like the jackass that he is.
K-Rod signed a three-year, $37 million incentive-laden deal in December of 2008. So, the Mets could save quite a bit of coin if they were able to pull this off. According to SI.com, they’d save about $17 million between this year and next. And they aren’t making the playoffs this year, so who cares about having a closer? Then again, the surgery will most likely end his season anyway.
But, don’t forget that the player’s union in baseball is stronger than any other union in professional sports. They’ll stick up for you and get you paid even when, you know, you were acting like a jackass.
