Red Sox intend to trade for Damon?

According to Peter Gammons on Twitter, the Boston Red Sox’ claim on Detroit Tigers rag-armed outfielder Johnny Damon was because they honestly want to make a trade for him. Many thought that it was just to block others from getting him, but apparently they are serious about acquiring him.

“Tigers explained to Damon Boston didn’t claim to block, they want him. Tampa didn’t even claimed him,” Gammons tweets in butchered English.

We aren’t completely sure that we understand this. Yes, Boston needs some hitting considering all the injuries they’ve been through. But, you are 5.5 games out of the division and 5.5 games out of the Wild Card. Either the New York Yankees or Tampa Bay Rays would have to stumble considerably and we just don’t see that happening right now.

The Red Sox need to pack it in and call it a year. They just suffered too many injuries and are in too tough of a division to really think about making the playoffs.
