Bush getting stripped of his Heisman?
Sources tell Jason Cole and Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports that the Heisman Trophy Trust will conclude that Reggie Bush was a fraud in 2005 at USC and will strip him of his Heisman Trophy award. There has been speculation that the award would go to second-place vote getter Vince Young, but it looks like the award will just be vacant for that year.
According to Yahoo, the Heisman Trophy Trust wanted to take their time in this investigation and make sure they did the right thing. But, after the NCAA decided that the New Orleans Saints RB had accepted illegal gifts from prospective agents and wiped out USC’s 2005 season, they didn’t really have much choice but to conclude the same thing.
What is funny in all of this is that Bush had the power to make it all go away a long time ago. His acceptance of cash and gifts from potential marketing agents only came to light because the guys wanted to be paid back and Reggie wouldn’t do it. If he had, they never would have gone to the media.
So, Bush clearly has no one to blame but himself. Not only for taking the money in the first place, but by refusing to pay it back. Well done, Reggie.
not sure if his simply paying them back would have been in his best interest. don't you think that would have given them additional leverage (blackmail) and confirmed his guilt through some kind of paper trail. not that the trail was that tough to sniff out since he was outed anyway.
major violation of the rules no doubt but he's by far not the first or the last – he just got caught. as long as the programs continue to exploit their athletes, agents or supporters will be there to entice the players with cash & gifts.
