Burnett won’t pitch in ALDS

A baseball official with knowledge of the team’s thinking tells ESPNNewYork.com that A.J. Burnett will not pitch for the New York Yankees in the ALDS. The source said that they will go with C.C. Sabathia in Game 1, Andy Pettitte in Game 2 and then Phil Hughes in Game 3.

According to the source, they will pitch Sabathia on short rest if there is a Game 4.

The Yankees must be absolutely thrilled about the five-year, $82.5 million they spent on Burnett. So much so, that they’ve opted to give him the ALDS off. Probably because they feel like he is so underpaid, that he deserves some extra vacation.

Over 33 outings this season, Burnett is 10-15 with a 5.26 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. Yikes. Talk about being worth every penny.

We’re curious to see what the Yanks do for pitching in a seven-game series. They still have a great team, but their starting pitching is questionable at best.
