Report: Alderson wants Mets’ GM job, so does Perry
ESPN’s Buster Olney gives us yet another update on the New York Mets search for a new manager and GM. According to Olney, Sandy Alderson wants to be the next general manager of those marvelous Mets.
“There is also no question about this:Sandy Alderson wants the Mets’ GM job;friends say he wants to get back into the work of running a club,” Olney tweets.
This is amazing news. This guy wants a multi-million dollar job opening? Crazy.
Here’s the problem, OTR has heard from several reputable sources that OTR‘s Michael Perry is actually extremely interested in the job as well. He hasn’t been interviewed by the Mets or even sent a fax or email from the club, but he has a burning desire to have full control over the Mets as they try to fix their roster and compete in 2011.
“I’d be GM of the Mets, why not?”, Perry told us via email at 3:30 AM last night. “It can’t really be that hard, can it? Cut all the bad players and bring in new ones that are better at baseball. People tend to over think things.”
According to most baseball insiders we’ve spoken to, Alderson has a much better chance of getting the job than Perry, but it’s not for a lack of desire on Perry’s part. Alderson is a long-time baseball executive who will interview with the team on Thursday. Perry left the main ticket office 24 voicemails that so far have gone unreturned.
Perry’s candidacy for the job may depend on how Thursday’s meeting with Alderson goes.
