Vick hints at DeSean holdout
Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick had what was supposed to be a run-of-the-mill press conference Tuesday morning at the NovaCare Complex. “Just happy we got a deal done,” “can’t wait to get back to work,” “looking forward to a great year.” That kind of crap.
But he dropped a few lines in about teammate DeSean Jackson that surely will raise some eyebrows. DeSean hasn’t been happy with his contract for quite some time now, as he’s still on his rookie, second-round pick deal. He’s clearly outperformed that contract and it sounds like he’s prepared to do something about it.
“Hopefully he will be here tomorrow,” Vick said. “DeSean has some things to think about and some decisions to make that only he can make.”
So Vick was then asked directly if he thought DeSean would hold out.
“I just don’t know. Just being realistic about the situation. It’s all in what DeSean wants,” said Vick.
You can read that as: DeSean Jackson ain’t going to be at camp when it starts.
This is not entirely shocking, but it’s something that the Philly media really hasn’t focused on. We’ve known for a while that DeSean wants a new contract, but the idea of him holding out – while very realistic – hasn’t been talked about much.
We expect him to make a fuss, but we also think the Eagles will eventually work with him on a new deal. Now, as to his actual value? That’s where you know this thing is going to get ugly. DeSean sees himself as one of the most explosive playmakers in the NFL. And he is. The Eagles will look at him and say that’s all well and good, but you are undersized and don’t make many plays on the short and intermediate routes. They may also point to his concussions.
Buckle in, folks!
