There was a good portion of the season spent wondering whether or not the Indianapolis Colts would be joining the 2008 Detroit Lions as the only two teams to lose all 16 games.

But, without Peyton Manning, was head coach Jim Caldwell really culpable? The Colts think so, as they have shown him the door and fired him not long after the Polians got the boot.

In short, the Colts are rebuilding. And that might just be yet another reason for Peyton to play elsewhere next season (if he’s able to play at all). All new coaches, front office execs, new systems….nah, Peyton can’t be bothered with that crap.

And he likely won’t have to. It’s widely expected that the Colts will take Stanford QB Andrew Luck with the first-overall pick in next April’s draft.

The Peyton Manning era is likely over in Indy.

Head coach Hue Jackson was not his guy, and there was the possibility that he could be tossed (especially the way he was running his mouth the last few weeks).

Well, according to Adam Schefter, McKenzie won the power struggle and has told Jackson to pound sand.

“Raiders fired Hue Jackson. More on ESPN,” Schefter tweets.

Jackson had accrued a decent amount of power in his short stint with the Raiders, and that could have cost him his job. Trading the first- and second-round picks for Carson Palmer did not help his cause. If Palmer lit the world on fire and they made the playoffs, Jackson would probably still have a job.

But, they didn’t make the tournament and now their future is weaker for it. They just have to hope that Palmer returns to form. Otherwise, that’s one of the worst trades in recent memory.

As for potential replacements, who the hell knows right now? We’ve heard Winston Moss, but there are so many coaches and coordinators being linked to this job and that job that we’d prefer not to keep up. Let us know when someone accepts a position.

And something did change for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as they have fired head coach Raheem Morris.

“I can’t do nothing but be gracious to everybody involved,” Morris told Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune. “I almost pulled it off. I almost did it. I almost got us winning again. At the end, though, I had nothing to stand on. The last 10 games – you can’t do that.”

What? You almost got the team winning again? Are you talking about 2010? That’s fine, but the Bucs were a sack of horse manure this year, losing the final five games by an average of 23 points. Yowsers. That’s not almost winning. That’s not even almost tying.

But, Morris seems to know that he was going to get the axe. He had to.

“I can’t be negative to anybody in the organization – not Mark Dominik, not anyone, not one bit. I can’t do it. They were too good to me,” Morris said.

So yeah, no one here is surprised. The Bucs ended up as one of the worst teams in the NFL this year, even though they supposedly had playoff aspirations at the beginning of the season. The coaching search now begins.

This was after an 0-7 start, but it did look as though things were getting better for the embattled head coach.

Likewise, Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley got his team’s ship turned around after a miserable start to the season. He had things going pretty well and then Matt Cassel got hurt and he had to try to win games with Tyler friggin’ Palko.

And the brass for both the Chiefs and the Dolphins finally had enough of them, as they each axed their guys with three games left to go in the season following terrible losses.

We don’t know who is replacing them and we haven’t bothered to find out either.

This isn’t the most surprising news in the world as there has been speculation about their jobs all year. Expect each team to continue to stink for the rest of the season.

And get someone in there while we’re waiting. Well, it looks like the finally got their wish. According to Jon Heyman of SI, the Cubs have fired Hendry.

“#cubs announce gm jim hendry has been dismissed,” Heyman tweets with less-than-perfect grammar.

Assistant GM Randy Bush will apparently take over his job in the interim.

Hendry actually did a somewhat decent job, he just threw some bad decisions in there. He was the GM since 2002 and they almost made it to the World Series in 2003. They won the NL Central in 2007 and 2008, so he couldn’t have been doing that bad of a job.

But, he did give Alfonso Soriano an eight-year, $136 million in 2006. That has not remotely worked out. Then you have the years of problems with Carlos Zambrano. I don’t even know to what degree that’s Hendry’s fault, but the guy really needs to go.

Regardless, for Cubs fans that wanted a change at the top, they got it.

After 10 years of running the Cincinnati Bengals offense, Bob Bratkowski was shown the door on Monday, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

The Bengals offense has underperformed as of late, failing to reach 21st or better in the league in points in any of the past three seasons. That’s pretty bad when you have guys like Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson on the team (regardless if they have been very good as of late).

Is this related to Palmer’s trade request? Did he say something like “either send Bob packing or trade me”? We think that the two are related, but we aren’t sure how just yet.

Supposedly, former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress had lunch with Marvin Lewis recently. Or dinner or whatever. He could emerge as someone to take over, but he shouldn’t expect great things out of Palmer. He’s getting close to toast at this point, even if not many people want to admit it.

Fisher was the longest tenured coach in the NFL, as he took over the Houston Oilers back in 1994 (he should have been the Philadelphia Eagles head coach in 1991, but they went with Kotite). In 16 seasons, he compiled a 142-140 record and was 5-6 in the playoffs. In 1999, his Titans lost to the Rams in the Super Bowl.

So now the question is: what happens with Vince Young? Do you still bounce him? Is he allowed to stay now that Fisher is gone? Is Adams just going to blow this whole thing up?

We’ll see.

And that’s with a defensive line coach that had they lineman sacking errr body out hee-yah.

So, the Titans today let Cecil know that they didn’t appreciate his work. According to Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean, they canned him.

“#Titans defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil was informed on Thursday he will not be retained by team, according to sources,” Wyatt tweeted.

One would think that ownership didn’t appreciate Cecil flipping the bird to officials during an October game, but then again Bud Adams would be the one owner that might have supported it.

We don’t think Cecil will get another coordinator job any time soon (unless the Philadelphia Eagles are dying to infuse their staff with mostly Titans), but he’ll probably get a job coaching someone’s secondary.

They were bad when Tom Cable took over the team, and they continued to be poor during his tenure. However, he did get things turned around a bit this year, getting the team to 8-8.

But, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that’s still not enough for the Raiders to keep him.

Photo Caption: When Cable gets shit housed on the sidelines, he tends to become a close talker and tells every player that they really should come check out his boat some time.

“Filed to ESPN: Raiders informed Tom Cable they will not pick up the option in his contract. He no longer is the Raiders head coach,” he tweets.

The Raiders could have kept Cable for $2.5 million in 2011, so it’s not like they dropped him because of his exorbitant salary. The truth is that the process of getting rid of Cable had more to do with the San Francisco 49ers sudden interest in Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, who was finally able to squeeze some life out of this group.

At the end of the day, it’s the Oakland Raiders. Analyze their moves all you like, it will just make your brain hurt.

In all fairness to Mangini, despite him being a total douchebag, it’s tough running a football organization with Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace, Brady Quinn, and Derek Anderson at quarterback. Rookie Colt McCoy showed some promise, but a coach usually needs more than one year to develop a possible franchise quarterback.

PHOTO CAPTION: “Two in the what? And one in the huh?”

Mangini’s two-year career with the Browns finished with four straight losses and a 10-22 overall record. They looked to be turning things around this year with the emergence of Peyton “The Avalanche” Hillis, but two ugly losses against the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals which would have gotten them to .500 if they had won killed any chances of being a respected football team.

Mangini’s future may be found as the head coach of the UCONN men’s football team. Cleveland’s vacancy, if not filled by Mike Holmgren, could be inviting to Eagles offense coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, ex-Panthers coach John Fox, or Jon Gruden, whose name surfaces with every available coaching position. Interstingly enough, Gruden is now getting offers for almost every job position imaginable; incuding, CEO of Johnson & Johnson, Store Manager of Bloomingdales at the Willow Grove Mall in Pennsylvania, and Senior Cash Invesment Manager at Goldman Sachs.

With just four games remaining in the season, the Broncos have fired McDaniels.

The team announced the move on their Twitter page.

“Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen has relieved Josh McDaniels of his head coaching duties. Details to follow on DenverBroncos.com. #fb,” they tweeted.

Photo Caption: Bowlen can read.

The move comes for a variety of reasons. Remember that hot start last year? They have been awful ever since. I’m not a huge Jay Cutler fan, but he is an okay QB that they didn’t have to move. They then hitched their wagon to Kyle Orton (who has actually been pretty good this year). They traded Peyton Hillis and his 13 TD’s were sent to Cleveland. They got Brady Quinn in return (he hasn’t sniffed the field).

But it’s much more than that. They used a first-round pick on Tim Tebow, who hasn’t remotely had a chance to show anything other than that he can be a goal-line quarterback (meaning…?). They traded up to get Alphonso Smith in the second round of the draft last year. He’s now on the Lions and stinks. These are terrible, terrible personnel moves.

And what about the recent SpyGate II? Bowlen clearly didn’t like that incident, and it essentially confirmed his fate, as Adam Schefter tells us.

“Pat Bowlen decides to make a decision that really was in the makings ever since the NFL found the Broncos guilty of the videotaping incident,” Schefter said on Sportscenter. “This is something that clearly the Broncos were thinking about, it was something they were unhappy about in London.”

Remember when the Broncos were good and had a stable organization? Me neither. It was a while ago. If they aren’t careful, they will become the Washington Redskins.

The talk of head coach Brad Childress’s head being on the chopping block has been around for quite some time as well.

But, there won’t be much more talk about the need to fire Childress, because the Vikings did it today. It was long overdue, but the Vikings finally said goodbye to Chilly.

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier will take over as head coach and see if he has some magic potion to get Brett Favre to stop sucking. At 3-7, there isn’t much Frazier can do, although the players instantly could be energized because they absolutely couldn’t stand Childress. It is now safe to drop Childress in all fantasy league formats.

That NFC Championship game last year seems like a long time ago, huh?

The Islanders got off to a decent start this season, but have lost 10 straight games. Injuries to Kyle Okposo and Mark Streit haven’t helped, but still, you are 4-10-3. Most NHL teams aren’t going to be overly thrilled with that.

This move makes perfect sense. The season is over and there is nothing Wade or anyone can do. There was a time when Garrett was considered the next up-and-coming head coach. That was before his offenses started to show serious problems.

So why not make this move? What are you going to do? Lose games? By making Garrett the interim head coach, you get to find out what he’s made of without the risk of giving him some long-term deal.

If Garrett works out, you have your next head coach. If he doesn’t, you haven’t lost anything.

According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the team fired manager Jerry Manuel and GM Omar Minaya was “relieved of his duties.”

Martino says that as of right now, Minaya has no role on the team and is free to look for another job. Luckily, they just opened a new Chipotle near Minaya’s house and they are looking for a few shift managers. Then again, Chipotle might not want Minaya charging $34 for a burrito that just falls apart in the end.

As of now, we don’t know who the Mets are looking at to fill these roles. We’ll know more when we hear from Wilpon.

Tough news for the coaches. Their contracts don’t run out until November 1st, so they’ll have to wait a bit for their fates. Sounds like fun.

They were the media darlings heading into the season, but the shine has worn off completely (and probably never should have been there to begin with).

The offense ranks 31st in the league and is absolutely putrid to watch. Alex Smith just isn’t very good, and the play calling has been lousy as well. There were reports after Sunday’s throttling that the Chiefs defensive players were calling out the plays before the Niners snapped the ball.

And it looks like the team wants to change that. After giving him a vote of confidence, the 49ers have fired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. He’ll be replaced by quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson, who will try to do something with this mess of a team. Raye’s decision to call three straight runs up the middle while trailing 24-3 probably didn’t help things.

But offense isn’t the only problem. And NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora says that the Niners plan to address the defensive side of the ball too. Specifically, he says that they plan to bench SS Michael Lewis and LB Takeo Spikes. Two veterans who use to be pretty damn good. Apparently, they aren’t anymore.

They went ahead and fired Fredi Gonzalez, their manager of the last three and a half years.

As for bench coach Carlos Tosca and hitting coach Jim Presley? They are gone too.

“It is never easy to make a change in managers,” Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said in a statement. “Fredi has been with our Club for four years. We have become close, and I am extremely fond of Fredi. I, along with all our fans, am grateful for Fredi’s contributions. At the same time, we can’t let personal feelings get in the way of taking steps that we believe are necessary to improve our ballclub.

“Decisions on individual personnel cannot supercede our overall goal, which is to win. We believe we can do better and be better. We owe it to our fans to put this team in the best possible position to win. Everyone knows how I feel about winning. That’s the reason we’re making this change.

“We still have a very long season in front of us, and plenty of time to turn things around. Everyone – our fans, our team, our organization, and myself – wants us to win. That continues to be, and will always be, the goal.”

Edwin Rodriguez will take over as interim manager.

Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Baltimore Orioles have fired manager Dave Trembley.

Trembley was the manager for the Orioles for most of the last four seasons. He finishes his sparkling tenure there with a 187-283 record.

Photo Caption: Not fully understanding who does the hiring and firing in baseball, Trembley begs for his job back.

Supposedly, this decision was made after the Orioles lost to the Yankees on Thursday 6-3. They are currently 15-39 and in last place in the AL East. Part of that can be attributed to them playing in a division full of studs. Part of that is due to the fact that they stink.

But as always, the coach/manager takes the fall for a team that can’t physically get it done on the field.

Juan Samuel has been hired as the interim manager. Good luck with that, Juan.

And that person was hitting coach Alan Cockrell.

The Mariners have an AL-worst .617 OPS and have lost eight straight games. They have also scored less runs than 28 of 30 MLB teams. Yeah, that’s not good. But, is Cockrell really to blame? Some of the players don’t think so.

“Let’s not go there,” said Ken Griffey, Jr. “I have no comment.”

Mike Sweeney isn’t keen on the move either.

“It’s brutal,” Sweeney said. “There are a lot of guys in here who deserve to get fired before him.”

So this clearly was not a popular decision in the clubhouse, but since you can’t fire the whole under-performing lineup, the coach is the one to go whether it’s right or wrong. The Mariners need to get it going because I picked them to win the AL West.

They have fired their head coach Eddie Jordan. OTR thinks that GM Ed Stefanski should be hitting the bricks soon too. After all, he’s the one that thought Jordan and his Princeton offense (which is predicated on passing and jump shooting) would be a fit for this current roster.

“What I thought would happen, did not occur,” Stefanski said. “The decision was not the right one.”

What did you think would happen, Ed? It was a mismatch from the beginning. What jump shooters do the Sixers even have on the roster? Andre Iguodala is an elite athlete who just doesn’t have a natural talent for the game of basketball. The only reason he’s been able to play at the NBA level somewhat functionally is because of his athleticism. He certainly can’t knock down jumpers with consistency.

Lou Williams? Allen Iverson? Elton Brand? These guys don’t have games that fit with one another at all. Throw in a coach in Jordan who has a system that doesn’t fit and you get 27 wins in a season.

Oh, and Jordan constantly called out his team after losses for playing with no heart or intensity. OTR spoke with one Sixers player this season that was befuddled at what was going on. He didn’t like Jordan or his system and said that no one had a clue what the hell was happening.

The best move for the Sixers right now is to let someone else besides Stefanski pick the next coach. He gets an F- for his selection of Jordan, who they will now be paying for several more years.

PHOTO CAPTION: Oregon Ducks alumni are pulling for Isiah Thomas to be the next coach and president of basketball operations

During his 13-year career as head coach, Kent made the NCAA tournament five times making it to the Elite 8 twice (2001-02, 2006-07). His best season was the 2001-02 season when he finished 26-9 and 14-4 in the PAC 10, winning the conference. His winningest season was in 2006-07 when his team went 29-8.

Much is the way of the NFL. You were here for one year and the team wasn’t good? There is the door. And that’s just what the Seattle Seahawks have done with Jim Mora, Jr. They fired him today, according to Jay Glazer.
This isn’t a huge surprise to anyone that caught a whiff of the Giants defense in the second half of the season. They were injured, couldn’t tackle, had poor schemes and were generally outmanned, especially in the secondary.

Photo Caption: Sheridan tries to preach defensive philosophy through his Japanimation drawings.

It’s believed that the Giants will look outside the organization for his replacement. For the love of god the only teams that were worse were the Rams and Lions. Time to look elsewhere.

In a surprising twist at the end of Washington’s season, the Redskins organization has chosen to cut ties with head coach Jim Zorn.

PHOTO CAPTION: “What do I care, I still got paid.”

Zorn was viewed by many to be the best coach in the toughest division in football, the NFC East. Although he was 4-12 this season and 12-20 combined for the past two seasons, Zorn was said to be the rock holding the Redskins organization together.

With the firing of Zorn taking place earlier this morning, owner Daniel Snyder now can focus on luring in Mike Shanahan to be the next coach of the sorry Washington franchise. But whoever is hired as the next coach, fans can expect a complete overhaul of a roster filled with players with no heart or talent.

For the record, what happened in Washington was not Jim Zorn’s fault. Right Daniel Snyder?

The school has been investigating his treatment of players since November 17th and several players have come forward and alleged verbal and physical abuse. We think what really irked the university was that this abuse didn’t result in a good football program. A 5-7 record combined with a 1-7 record in the Big 12 means that they can’t tolerate the abuse.

You go 10-2? Ehhh….maybe it’s not so bad and these kids need to toughen up. But he was two games under .500 and we think about 35 pounds over .500.

Kansas officials have long suspected that Mangino was eating a few players here and there, but they never found physical evidence. We really aren’t into making fun of someone’s weight, but jeez dude. This is a serious health issue, this guy is huge.

If he can’t find work as a coach, he can always go back to acting.

“We have great expectations for our football program, and we have not been able to meet those expectations,” said Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick.

That’s putting it mildly. It’s been a string of disappointing seasons for Weis, capped off by a four-game losing streak. Hell, after one of those losses (UConn), a fan flat-out punched Jimmy Clausen in the eye after he had dinner with his family.

The good part for Weis? He has six years left on his contract, so if he doesn’t find a job right away, he’ll be ok.

Rob Ianello will take his place until a new head coach can be found. Ianello’s duties will include talking about how they can’t wait to get after it next season. Not sure what else he’d do since there are no more football games this year. Did they make a meaningless bowl game? We have no idea. But if they did, then he’ll be responsible for that.

A day after ESPN terminated baseball analyst and former Mets GM Steve Phillips, the company today announced Brooke Hundley has also been fired. The reason Hundley (the 22-year-old production assistant Phillips was banging on the side) was let go was not revealed. If we had to guess, we’d say she was showing up late for work.

The network did give a reason for Phillips firing, however, saying his ability to represent ESPN was “significantly and irreparably damaged.” His relationship with his wife, Marni, has also been significantly and irreparably damaged. She filed for divorce last week.

Phillips’ representative Steve Lefkowitz told the media that his client has entered a rehab facility to deal with his behavioral issues.

“Steve Phillips is not a sleazebag. He’s a good guy who just fell off the wagon,” Lefkowitz said. I guess he just took a tumble in 1998 when he had sex with his Mets employee too.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have fired VP of Player Development Tony Bernazard. But why? Because the Mets farm system sucks a big one and they have no one to replace the injured lineup right now? DUI? Dog fighting? What could it be?

Was it a string of recent events including an argument with K-Rod on the team bus? Did that also include a tirade at Double-A Binghamton in which he yelled at the players and took his shirt off to challenge them to a fight? We think that’s it.

“Yeah [it happened], but I’m not going to talk about that,” Rodriguez told The Post. “Not going to get into it.”

So yeah, they fired him and are expected to announce it tomorrow. It seems the VP of Player Development was a team cancer. How in the hell does that happen?

“That guy [Bernazard] is crazy,” the player said. “No one like[s] him.”

Curry only managed to squeeze out 39 wins for the Pistons this year, including a first round playoff loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The last-year Pistons led by Flip Saunders finished 2nd in the Eastern Conference with 59 wins, eventually getting eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals by the Boston Celtics.

PHOTO CAPTION: “You realize you’re gonna be the lone reason I get fired after this season, don’t you?”

When dissecting what really happened to the Pistons this year, it’s quite easy to understand why the 20 game drop in wins. Allen Iverson. When Joe Dumars decided to trade team-first guard Chauncey Billups for me-first guard Allen Iverson, the Pistons quickly became a horrible team. Iverson screwed up all team chemistry, couldn’t make his teammates better, and stunted the growth of Rodney Stuckey. The good news is Allen Iverson won’t be back as a Piston and that alone should swing back 10 more wins for Detroit.
