League sources tell Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski that Josh Kroenke (Stan’s son) sat down with Carmelo Anthony over the weekend in Baltimore in an attempt to try to sell the superstar on staying in Denver and signing a contract extension.

According to the sources, no resolutions were reached. Not shocking.

Wojnarowski is also told that all the talk of ‘Melo wanting to go to New York to play with the Knicks is overblown. He would really like to join the Houston Rockets. Why? We have no clue, and the report doesn’t say.

However, Anthony knows that his best bet to get the most money out of all of this is to take the three-year, $65 million extension that’s sitting on the table now from the Nuggets. A trade he could worry about later. Especially with all of the uncertainty regarding the next CBA and owners insistent on shortening the length of these insane max contracts.

Anthony knows that he’d be taking a big risk by playing out the last year of his deal and hoping for a ginormous deal on the open market.

Stay tuned.

Jason Reid of the Washington Post says that a source told him during the offseason that the Washington Redskins had concerns about their running back depth behind Clinton Portis. You are probably thinking, “yeah, duh. That’s why they signed Larry Johnson and Willie Parker.”

No, this was after they had already signed those two.

While guarantees have still not been finalized and that essentially means that the deal isn’t done, but someone with knowledge of the situation tells the Newark Star-Ledger that the New York Jets and center Nick Mangold have agreed to a seven-year, $55 million contract.

One would have to think that Mangold will get more than the $20 million guaranteed to Jason Brown last year by the St. Louis Rams.

Head coach Rex Ryan was again publicly hyping his players, which Mike Tannenbaum must love.

“You lock up the best center in football,” Ryan said. “That would be a huge thing for our franchise.”

Now, the Jets can turn their full attention to Darrelle Revis. That is, if they aren’t so turned off by his reported contract demands that they are willing to sit and do nothing. The better that Antonio Cromartie and rookie Kyle Wilson look, the longer the Jets probably feel like they can sit on their hands.

When most people thought of what types of things could keep the Minnesota Vikings out of the playoffs, their first thought was probably “Tarvaris Jackson playing QB.” And they’d have been right. But this Sidney Rice issue isn’t far down that list.

Rice has decided to have surgery on his troublesome hip and it looks like that will keep him out about half the season. Jeff Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Jason La Canfora of NFL Network both think he’ll return about halfway into the year, but Rotoworld is predicting a return around Thanksgiving.

What do those predictions mean? Absolutely nothing! He’ll be back when he gets back.

Although this is speculation, Zulgad does cover the team and makes an interesting observation, whether it’s an educated guess or otherwise. He thinks Rice’s contract situation led him to get the surgery later rather than sooner. He’s scheduled to make $550,000 this year. Rice, not Zulgad.

We can honestly say that if that’s the case, we don’t really blame him. If you aren’t happy being so underpaid, why get your body beaten to hell when you can just have surgery and sit out?

Not too long ago, the fine folks at ESPN Scouts Inc referred to Tyson Jackson’s rookie season with the Kansas City Chiefs as an “all-around awful” year. There isn’t much wiggle room there. Sounds like it’s safe to say that he sucked.

But, he was the No. 3-overall pick in last year’s draft, so he’ll most likely bounce back and show why the everyone thought so highly of him, right? Not so. According to Kent Babb of KansasCity.com, Jackson has had a “poor camp” and is in danger of losing his starting job.

“I wld guess Jax based on his poor camp, but it’d be odd to have two undersized DEs in the 3-4 @captainmcinnis: Who loses job, Dorsey or Jax?,” Babb answers in a tweet.

It sounds like Jackson is already headed for bust status.

But, there is something even more telling in that tweet. The person who asked the question asked whether the guy to lose his job would be Jackson or his former teammate at LSU and No. 5-overall pick in 2008, Glenn Dorsey. It would make sense to us then to infer that Dorsey is stinking up the joint too.

Let’s do some math. Dorsey signed a five-year, $51 million deal with $22 million in guarantees in 2008. In August of 2009, Jackson signed a five-year deal worth $57 million, with $31 million guaranteed.

Ouch!

That’s $53 million guaranteed to what looks like two bums. Carl Peterson had his fingerprints on the Dorsey selection, but Scott Pioli chipped in to the disaster by selecting Jackson. If Eric Berry is a trainwreck too, then someone has some ‘splainin’ to do.

But, before we rail on these guys too much. It’s very possible that they just aren’t cut out to be 3-4 ends. Maybe they are better suited to be tackles in a 4-3 system. We would have to think that if the Chiefs finally do cut bait with one or both of them that someone in a 4-3 will take a low-risk chance on them.

You may or may not have heard that the marriage of Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren has been a little on the rocks lately. It got especially bumpy when Elin found out that Tiger was hiring hookers like it was his job.

Things got worse from there and they decided to get divorced (I guess you just can’t work things out for the kids when the dad has about 19 women all claiming that he hired them for sex acts). And this morning, the divorce was finalized.

And TMZ has learned that when the two of them and their attorneys all got together to sign, seal and deliver the official split, the two didn’t say one word to each other. Not even “hi.”

TMZ says that they decided to keep their distance and stand with their lawyers instead. Maybe Elin wanted to stand next to her new pile of cash. How great would it have been if Tiger brought a real trashy-looking prostitute with him? Affectation? Photo ops?

According to Bob Glauber of Newsday, the New York Jets are close to signing center Nick Mangold to a long-term deal. That’s generally believed to be the case. But, according to Glauber, that is most certainly not the case with CB Darrelle Revis, despite what Tim Cowlishaw has said.

Sources tell Glauber that the Jets are offering Revis Island $122 over 10 years. Wow. No, all of that wouldn’t be guaranteed (far from it), but that’s a huge deal if that’s really the case.

But, Glauber said his sources are telling him that Revis actually wants $162 million over 10 years. That’s beyond ridiculous, especially since he still has three years left on his current contract.

That’s a $40 million difference of opinion and it doesn’t look like they are going to bridge that gap any time soon. How long will Revis continue to hold out? It looks like he’ll have to be the one to budge since I can’t see any team paying him that kind of dough. Nor should they.

Wroten reinstated

While perusing our OTR Twitter feed, we saw a tweet from Fox 31′s Josina Anderson out in Denver. She says in broken English that the NFL has reinstated DT Claude Wroten following his one-year suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

“Fox 31 ALERT: Breaking News: Agent Richard Burnoski tell me Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstates DT Claude Wroten after 1-year suspension,” she tweets.

Wroten was suspended back in August of 2008, but it could have been extended several times. Since he was pretty much wasting oxygen in St. Louis before he got suspended, no one really bothered to keep tabs on it.

Wroten was a third-round pick of the Rams in 2006 and no one really cares. We fully expect his agent’s phone to be ringing off the hook with teams saying that they have no interest.

Where else? This is from a Spring/Clear Spring preseason football scrimmage in good ol’ Texas. We don’t really know what to say about this, other than we love the idiot kid saying “we got one of ‘em hurt!”

Say it in an obnoxious southern accent for full effect.

Maybe we think this is ridiculous because we think people who really care about high school football are ridiculous. These kids are 15-17 years old, how can you possibly get all wrapped up in their athletic competitions unless one of them is your son? Or, as in the case of Nick Mangold’s sister, daugher?

Anyway, here are some kids fighting. We haven’t really found many other stories we feel like writing about today.

It must be noted that we never truly know the people that we watch on television. Guys who come across as stand-up dudes are often exposed as awful frauds. And some times, there are people that seem like arrogant dicks, but it’s just their schtick and they actually aren’t bad guys.

But, didn’t you always kind of assume that ESPN‘s Jay Mariotti was a total douchebag? And wasn’t that kind of reinforced when he was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of felony domestic assault charges.

Apparently, he didn’t like that his girlfriend was being flirty with someone else at a club, so he decided to literally take matters into his own hands. A disagreement at the club continued back at Mariotti’s Venice apartment and he was arrested when they found bruises and cuts on her.

The 51-year old was released on $50,000 bail

What a dick. What a complete boner.

Now, there are multiple reports that he and ESPN could be headed for a split. SportsbyBrooks’ specifically has cited sources who say that if these reports of domestic assault are true, that he’s finished with the World Wide Leader.

“If the (L.A. TIMES) report is true, he’s done. It’s a death sentence to his career at ESPN,” a Bristol, CT based ESPN source told Brooks. Another ESPN source told Brooks, “I don’t think he’ll survive.”

We don’t think that’s much of a stretch. Safe to say ESPN doesn’t need him when they already have 237 talking heads on the network.

Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw is standing by his report that the New York Jets and CB Darrelle Revis are close to coming to an agreement and that the deal will probably be announced on Wednesday.

“@NickSpano i was told they will announce it this week, not def wednesday but probably wednesday. This person has never been wrong,” Cowlishaw tweets.

Cowlishaw acknowledges that he’s going to get some push back from Jets reporters, but doesn’t back down from his report.

“I expect Jets writers to shoot down what I wrote about Revis. That’s their job. It’s not Wednesday is it? I fully expect it then,” he tweets.

Indeed they have tried to do that. The Newark Star-Ledger, New York Daily News and even Adam Schefter of ESPN have cautioned against buying into this report.

Rotoworld.com makes it very clear that Cowlishaw is a columnist and not a reporter. They originally thought his Twitter account got hacked. They not that he has no track record of breaking stories.

I guess we’ll all find out on Wednesday.

This would explain a lot. We mentioned before that Albert Haynesworth was having issues with the Washington Redskins and how they’ve been referring to his “headaches.”

Well now, a league source tells Jason La Canfora of NFL Network that Haynesworth is likely suffering from a condition known as rhabdomyolysis, where muscle fibers get broken down and can have a negative affect on the kidneys.

The source said that Haynesworth was experiencing the symptoms of rhabdomyolysis, which include dizziness, nausea, vomiting and muscle swelling.

Luckily for Haynesworth, his symptoms weren’t on the extreme end of the spectrum and he was able to recover enough to play in Saturday night’s game against the Ravens. But, because he didn’t practice this week, he wasn’t able to get out there with the ones, which he didn’t like at all.

Just when we thought all was fine in Redskinland, we have an incident. We all know about Albert Haynesworth skipping the offseason workouts for the Washington Redskins and him not wanting to play in the 3-4 and Shanahan failing him in conditioning tests and so on.

But, Haynesworth seemed to be ok with the new scheme and came out a while ago supporting the 3-4 defense. Now? He has other issues.

Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella had said a while ago that this would be his last season. After 2010, he was retiring.

But, due to the declining health of his mother, Piniella had to cut it short. Sadly, he announced that today would be his last game and that he’s done after this.

“Lou announces stepping down after today’s game,” Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times tweets, basically repeating what we just told you.

It’s a shame that he had to step down this way, but family first. It looks like third-base coach Mike Quade will take over for the rest of the season and not Alan Trammell. Quade will also be considered for the full-time job next year.

That is, unless the Cubs don’t make the playoffs.

Washington Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg left last night’s start against the Phillies with what has been diagnosed as a strain of the flexor tendon in his right forearm. And sources have told injury expert Will Carroll that Strasburg will need to see a specialist or two. This isn’t good, but contrary to some reports, Strasburg has not officially been shut down for the season (even if it’s easy to infer that it’s a likely conclusion).

“RT @washingnats: #Strasburg has not been shut down for the season, according to GM Mike Rizzo. #Nats,” Carroll retweets.

Carroll modified his earlier tweet that Strasburg will need to see the dreaded Dr. James Andrews.

“To clarify, sources told me that Nats would consult with specialists after MRI. Assumed Andrews, forgot Stras is SoCal; could be Yocum,” Carroll tweets.

Regardless of whether he is done for the season or not, this is a bit of a concern. When you throw high 90′s consistently and you start to break down, that’s a problem. We hope that he doesn’t continue to have arm issues throughout his career, but it is the Nationals we are talking about.
