When the Cincinnati Bengals aren’t bringing in players who have issues with the law, they are adding guys who simply can’t help the team. Last year it was Laveraneous Coles. This year? It’s Antonio Bryant.

And the Bengals have finally decided to part ways with the wide receiver that they already spent $7.85 million on. That’s right, the Bengals cut Antonio Bryant.

After signing him to a four-year, $28 million contract in the offseason, the Bengals just couldn’t get him healthy enough to get on the field. So far, he’s practiced one day in training camp.

One would have to think that once Bryant gets himself fully healthy that he’ll be an attractive option for many teams. He can still play, he just needs to get healthy.

Antonio Bryant has given the Cincinnati Bengals about one day of training camp practice since they signed him to a four-year, $28 million contract this offseason. It’s safe to say that signing him was a mistake. His balky knee has prevented him from adding anything to the team.

Now, a source tells Bob Glauber of Newsday that the Bengals are pretty much prepared to move on from Bryant.

Does that mean that he’s going to be cut soon? Not necessarily.

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer says that it’s much more likely that the Bengals stash him on injured reserve rather than cut him. If they just decided to release him, they’d be out the $7 million they gave him up front.

Bryant’s agent hasn’t heard any talk of him being cut either.

“From what I understand, things have progressed the past week,” he said with regards to Bryant’s knee. However, clicking on the article that has that quote on the Bengals’ official website takes you to a page that says “The Article may have expired or has been deleted.” Not sure what that means.

We happen to think more along the lines of Reedy. Why get rid of the guy and lose all that money? If his knee gets healthy he could be a nice addition next year.

As you’ve probably heard by now, Terrell Owens signed with the Cincinnati Bengals today. We kept hearing about Antonio Bryant and how slow his knee has been coming along.  Apparently, the Bengals were concerned about it because they brought in T.O. (we’ve even heard that Bryant is a candidate for PUP).

Owens is signed for one year at $2 million. There is another $2 million that he can earn in incentives.

A league source tells PFT that Owens can make $333,333 for each of the following stats: 60 catches, 900 yards, and 10 touchdowns.

Owens caught 55 for 829 yards and five TD’s last season with an awful Buffalo Bills offense, so those numbers are attainable…sort of. The Bengals do like to run Cedric Benson and don’t forget that they have other weapons. Namely, Chad Ochocinco.

Plus, there is first-round pick Jermaine Gresham, and what if Bryant starts getting healthy? There is only one football to go around.

So think about it, should the Bengals have really given him an incentive-laden deal based on his prior conduct? What if the Bengals starting losing (entirely possible)? And what if, during the course of them not winning games, Owens isn’t getting a ton of balls thrown his way (entirely possible)?

How might he react then? Public blow up? Ripping Carson Palmer a new one?

Entirely possible.

To be fair to Owens though, he’s behaved for quite a while now. And until we see another major dust up, we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Jocklife.com is reporting that the Cincinnati Bengals and free agent WR Antonio Bryant have agreed to a four-year contract. Under the terms of the contract, Bryant will run fast and catch footballs when they are thrown to him.

Jocklife is an agent-run site that does have some credibility, but this is by no means official. Bryant had a rebirth recently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after sitting out a year from football. He was originally a 2002 draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys.

Former Buffalo Bills WR Terrell Owens has arrived in Cincinnati and is preparing to meet with the Bengals brass. Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer managed to get a quote or two from the mercurial wideout.

“Right now this is my first stop and we’ll see how it goes from there,” Owens said. “Chad [Ochocinco] and I both can alleviate a lot of pressure off each other and we can make Carson [Palmer's] job easier.”

The Bengals, meanwhile, spent the day with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Bryant. He left today without signing a contract, so the Bengals will apparently see what T.O. thinks about playing in the 513.

We just don’t think adding a good WR will make much of a difference for the Bengals. They’ve had great WR tandems in the past and it’s gotten them nowhere. We are starting to wonder if Carson Palmer just isn’t the guy to get it done. Amazingly, for a first-overall draft selection, he’s avoided major criticism since he’s never won a playoff game. Maybe Donovan McNabb should go play in Cincinnati where they are much more forgiving.

After what seemed like pointless internet rumors (our favorite kind) about T.O. possibly joining Chad OchoCinco in Cincinnati, it now seems that those rumors weren’t so pointless or internety. What?

But seriously, Bengals.com writer Geoff Hobson thinks the Bengals are one of the two teams cited in a PFT report as having interest in T.O. He thinks the team could be players for Owens because they are looking at all wide receiver options out there right now.

And apparently, that group also includes Antonio Bryant, Kevin Walter, Chris Chambers, and Josh Reed. Bryant and T.O. have been known to be a bit attitudinal, but in case you forgot, that doesn’t effect the Bengals thinking regarding personnel.

UPDATE: Bob Glauber of Newsday says no way. “Let me repeat: Despite releasing Laveranues Coles, the Bengals will NOT be pursuing Terrell Owens,” he tweets.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant underwent arthroscopic surgery last month and it’s possible he did too much too soon.  Stephen Holder from the St. Petersburg Times indicates the Buccaneers are deeply concerned about his injury and unless Bryant’s left knee makes dramatic improvement, the Bucs expect him to miss Sunday’s game at Buffalo.

He did not participate in the Buc’s morning practice and it has yet to be determined if he will practice in the evening.

If Bryant isn’t able to go on Sunday look for Michael Clayton to be the main target again.  Sammie Stroughter will move into Bryant’s spot.  Maybe Keyshawn Johnson will get some reps.
