But, we couldn’t possibly think that they would be the only team interested in one of the best QB’s in NFL history should be become available.

And ESPN‘s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen are reporting that you can add the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins to that list. The Dolphins are hardly surprising given that no amount of second-round picks or free-agency signings have filled the QB void since Dan Marino left. And no, Chad Pennington and Jay Fiedler don’t count.

But the Cardinals? The Cardinals just gave up a second-round pick and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to the Philadelphia Eagles for Kevin Kolb. And then they gave him a big contract. So…you are admitting that you made a major screw up and Kolb isn’t remotely who you thought he was?

On one hand, that’s a big mistake to admit that quickly. On the other hand, I give them credit for moving on before the error is compounded by more losing.

This was after an 0-7 start, but it did look as though things were getting better for the embattled head coach.

Likewise, Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley got his team’s ship turned around after a miserable start to the season. He had things going pretty well and then Matt Cassel got hurt and he had to try to win games with Tyler friggin’ Palko.

And the brass for both the Chiefs and the Dolphins finally had enough of them, as they each axed their guys with three games left to go in the season following terrible losses.

We don’t know who is replacing them and we haven’t bothered to find out either.

This isn’t the most surprising news in the world as there has been speculation about their jobs all year. Expect each team to continue to stink for the rest of the season.

The offer was supposedly a third-round conditional pick that can jump up to a second rounder.

The trade offer seems fair, but a high-ranking team source tells Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer that there is “zero truth” to those rumors.

Reedy thinks it’s unlikely for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons though, is that “[i]t’s four weeks into the season, which in Brown’s world is not the appropriate length of punishment for someone who decided he would rather retire than play here.”

Brown has made it very clear to everyone that his heels are dug in on this. And we don’t think a second rounder would get it done anyway. Brown will want a first-round pick for sure, and we aren’t sure he’d even make a difference in Miami. That team is pretty bad and a good QB coming in cold who doesn’t know the system can’t be that much of a help.

Bush seems to be poised for a major role this season even he doesn’t end up putting up huge numbers. If nothing else, they are determined to get him out there and use him as much as possible.

He has lined up all over formations so far in camp, so he’s most likely not going to be used as a traditional load-carrying back. Not that he could anyway, he’s already proven that.

But, he might be worth a flyer at some point in your fantasy draft. Especially if it’s a PPR league.

A league source tells PFT that the Ravens have signed Williams to a two-year deal worth up to $4 million.

Williams surprisingly still has tread on the tires since he took so much time off to smoke pot. He averaged 4.2 yards-per-carry last year with Miami and will certainly put a dent in Rice’s fantasy stock.

We look forward to another frustrating year of Ray Rice.

Whether he was getting cut with glass and telling people he slipped on a McDonald’s bag, or dogging it in practice by punting footballs, or getting stabbed by his wife, something didn’t seem right.

And, according to Marshall, something isn’t right. In a 30-minute post-practice interview on Sunday, he revealed that he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

“For so long, I’ve been just trying to get help. I’ve been seeking help,” Marshall said after practice Sunday. “I’ve been talking with doctors since I’ve been in the NFL. No one has ever helped me. So I was praying there was a treatment out there for what I suffered from and there was.”

This disorder can stem from unstable personal relationships (check), fear of failure (probably check) and unhealthy self image (probably check).

“There comes a time in a guy like myself’s life, with everything that I’ve been through, that you become bulletproof to the critics and to what the world thinks of you,” Marshall said. “Right now, today, I am vulnerable. I am making myself vulnerable. And I want it to be clear that this is the opposite of damage control. The only reason why I’m standing here today is to use my story to help others who may suffer from what I suffer from.”

Hopefully, Marshall gets it under control and is able to help others. We’re rooting for him. It actually does explain a lot.

So now, the pundits are saying that this takes the Dolphins out of the Kyle Orton race. Why? Matt Moore has played about four good games of NFL football. Why is he the answer? Orton isn’t Joe Montana, but he’s proven he can play well and win games consistently. This is like showing up to a NASCAR race, and when everyone asks you where your race car is, you point to your ’83 Buick Skylark and say, “no, I’m good, I brought this.”

You didn’t solve the problem.

They did the same exact thing in Seattle. “Oh, we don’t need Kevin Kolb, we solved our QB problem with Tarvaris Jackson!” No, you didn’t. Tarvaris Jackson stinks at football. The Vikings didn’t agonize over Brett Favre for two years because Jackson is a stud in the making.

So, enjoy Matt Moore, Miami. Orton might not be a Super Bowl quarterback, but he’ll give you a better chance to have a winning season than the combination of Moore and Chad Henne.

I don’t get it. Signing crappy quarterbacks does not solve your signal-caller problem. These same executives and coaches will be the ones with the stunned look on their faces on the sidelines and luxury boxes in Week 10 when they are getting their asses handed to them by the Jets 48-3.

Gee….we thought we had our guy in Matt Moore.

And Bush has now agreed to a new contract with his new team to complete the move.

“The early-morning negotiations that leaked beyond 2 a.m. have resulted in an agreement today between the Dolphins and RB Reggie Bush,” Darlington tweets.

Reports are that Bush agreed to a two-year, $10 million contract with the Dolphins, who sent an undisclosed late-round pick to the Saints.

To be clear, this isn’t a feature role for Bush. He’ll be a third-down back while rookie Daniel Thomas is the starter. Thomas will get the bulk of the work, with Bush being the support guy.

He basically said that he didn’t care for his “micromanaging” style of coaching.

Now that the 34-year old is a free agent and the Dolphins don’t seem to have much experience at running back, Williams is backing off of those comments…a bit.

“If you look at any relationship, for the relationship to be productive and to move forward and to grow, sometimes things have to be said that one person is not going to like to hear,” Williams said. “But I know Tony is an adult and I’m an adult, and I’m sure we can move past it.”

He did acknowledge, however, that there is some truth to what he initially said.

“I think there is at least a shred of truth in there, and if he can appreciate that and learn from it, from the voice of the players, I think everyone is better in the end, and I think the Dolphins are a better team next year,” he said.

Someone could be fishing for a job.

People keep talking about teams that need QB’s and how Bulger could be desirable to them.

That latest is Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, who says to keep an eye on the Miami Dolphins.

“Miami might end up being the team to watch if a market really forms for Bulger,” La Canfora writes.

But why? Why does anyone think that Bulger is the solution to anyone’s QB issues? He hasn’t completed 60% of his passes since 2006. He didn’t play at all last year. In the last three years that he did play, he’s thrown 34 interceptions.

And all stats aside, has anyone seen him play in the last 3-4 years? Talk about shell shocked. He looks skittish and indecisive in the pocket because he clearly doesn’t want to get hit. I’m fine with Bulger as a backup, I really am. But can we please stop talking about this guy like he is the difference between making the playoffs and being a lousy-to-average team?

Please, stop.

If the Dolphins are really interested in Bulger, it should only be as turd insurance for Chad Henne.

Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall sure does know how to pick them. He had huge issues with his last girlfriend Rasheedah Watlety and now it seems that he doesn’t get along so well with his current broad.

According to Andrew Carter of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Marshall’s wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall, has admitted to stabbing him in the abdomen last night. She claims it was in self defense and we aren’t sure whether or not to believe her. On one hand, Marshall can be a royal a-hole. On the other, he doesn’t have a great track record for hanging out with respectable broads.

“Statement from Harvey Greene, Dolphins spokesman: ‘We are aware of the report. And our thoughts are with Brandon at this time … … We will look into the matter. But because we are not allowed to have any contact with any of our players, we will refrain from making any further comment.’ Again, that’s from Harvey Greene, Dolphins longtime spokesman,” Carter said in three tweets.

The best part is that Marshall originally told police that he was injured after he slipped on a vase. What? How in the hell do you slip on a vase? Kind of like when he claimed he slipped on a McDonald’s bag and that’s how he cut himself up? This guy is awfully clumsy for a graceful professional athlete.

There are a couple reports out there that indicate a vase was involved, but that it was thrown at Marshall. Who knows if that’s really true. In most domestic incidents involving Marshall, it takes a little while for the real story to come out.

Both of these two could find themselves in a decent amount of trouble. Did Marshall lie to police? Did she really stab him in something other than self defense? We can’t wait to find out what really went down. In the meantime, it’s just more evidence that Marshall isn’t surrounding himself with the best people.

Whether he was downing sizzurp like it was his job, or never taking responsibility for his awful, awful play on the field, the former No. 1-overall pick was always entertaining…even if it wasn’t in a good way.

Now, sources tell Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports that Russell is most likely done in the NFL after his “life coach” John Lucas recently told him to leave Houston because of his deteriorating work habits. Russell began working with Lucas last year and initially was working hard to return to the NFL. But even Lucas, who has helped a myriad of pro athletes overcome addiction problems, had to throw up his hands and give up.

Yes, this is the same guy who coached the Miami Tropics! Richard Dumas and Roy Tarpley? No problem. JaMarcus? Ehhhhh….apparently, Lucas can’t cure laziness.

Charles Barkley was even brought in in an attempt to motivate Russell, but no dice.

“The title of your article should be, ‘It’s Over,’ ” on source told Cole. “It’s just amazing that you could say that about somebody who is 25 years old and just got drafted four years ago. But it’s been almost a year since he got cut and there’s no interest. Even before the lockout, nobody wanted to get near the kid.”

It was probably over for Russell when Baltimore Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome refused to meet with him in Alabama in January (actually, it was probably over for him when they announced his name on draft day). They thought meeting Ozzie would motivate him, but they didn’t even get the chance to find out.

Russell worked out for the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins last Novemeber, but that didn’t go so well. He reportedly was 288 lbs. when he worked out for the Redskins, and 292 lbs. when he met with the Dolphins. Sheesh!

“It’s such a waste of talent,” the source said. “It’s hard to believe a guy with that much ability could let it just waste. It’s sad. … It’s like they say, you can’t coach desire.”

He’s only 25-years old, but it looks like Jamarcus’ time in the NFL is over. At least he made a few bucks.

He was an undrafted rookie free agent who signed with the New England Patriots coming out of Navy. He later played with the Eagles in 2009 and also played with the Dolphins. He was born and raised in Philly and like most Philly sports fans, he has some strong opinions. However, it wasn’t a strong opinion that put him in the hot seat for starting a rumor involving Jon Gruden taking over as the Eagles head coach this coming up season — if we have one. OTR Sports catches up with the never-lacking-in-strong-opinions fullback now.

OTR: What did you post on Facebook that started the Jon Gruden replacing Andy Reid rumor, which blew up the sports world and the city of Philadelphia?

Kyle Eckel: “I’ve been asked this a bunch and the exact phrasing I couldn’t supply. But, it was basically something like, ‘inside word, Gruden is in town shacked up at a hotel. I don’t think he’s here for a position on the Flyers.’”

OTR: You have since removed that post and have issued a statement on your Facebook page. Who is taking responsibility for the fiasco and why?

KE: “I removed it because people were taking it so seriously. My Facebook news feed is… a Facebook news feed. Not the Wall Street Journal. It’s not affiliated with any local media. And it certainly isn’t affiliated with the Eagles. I hope people don’t think since playing for the Eagles three years ago I’m now a spokesman for the team. To be honest, I can see the reason for confusion with fans of the team and my Facebook friends. And for that I apologize. My friends and I were watching the Super Bowl at a local restaurant and a rumor buzzed around the place. I shared the rumor, which being in my situation, was a poor decision. Soon after the comment began erupting I jumped on Facebook again and posted that it was just a rumor. But the local media took off and it was too late. For those actual media outlets that used my Facebook as some breaking news source, it was laughable.”

OTR: What do you think are the journalistic ramifications of social networks such as Facebook?

KE: “The journalistic ramifications are huge…if you’re a journalist. If you’re not than social networking sites should be treated as such. Social networking sites.”

OTR: According to a poll on Philly.com, 67% of 1000 fans are in favor of Gruden over Reid this season — not to mention the overwhelming outcry from fans on the local sports radio. Do you think the fans’ feelings are warranted?

KE: “People are entitled to their opinions and everyone likes taking polls at the click of a mouse. Are the fans warranted? I don’t know.”

OTR: After playing with the Patriots, the Dolphins, the Birds and the Saints where do you rank the Eagles organization? Where do you rank Andy Reid as a head coach?

KE: “I wouldn’t rank Andy Reid just as I wouldn’t rank Bill Belichick or any coach I’ve played for. I’ve been fortunate to play for some of the games greatest in college and the NFL and each have their own unique styles to succeed. And they’ve all succeeded.”

OTR: What are your thoughts on new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo making the jump from being the O-line coordinator? What’s your thoughts on his ability to read defenses, dissect them and teach it?

KE: “Juan is a great coach. He’s a motivator and fans will love his energy on the sidelines. Juan taught me a lot during my time with the Eagles and every single day after practice he’d be the last coach on the field with his players going over some extra work on fundamentals and schemes. I don’t doubt Juan’s knowledge of football. In fact, I’m confident in it. I hope his tenure as D-cord is a success like it was as being the offensive line coach.”

OTR: As a Philly native you are a huge Flyers fan. What are your thoughts on this year’s run to the Cup? (Personally, I’m picking the Flyers and Sharks in the Cup this year if San Jose can get past the Wings. I’d love to see Shelley (not that he’d play much in the playoffs) and Bouche go up against their former team. Do you think Bouche is up for it? And do you think there is a role for guys like Jody Shelley and Daniel Carcillo (AKA Dennis Rodman on ice) in the playoffs?)?

KE: “I love the Flyers and for a long time during my childhood the Flyers were #1 to me in this town. I think their chemistry and puck movement make them a good pick for Stanley Cup Champs but goaltending might be the only problem. I worry about a rookie in net and Boucher who in my opinion is a good goalie but a big question remains. Can he be that guy who gets hot during the playoffs and I just don’t know. I really wanted the Flyers to pick up Niemi in the offseason since he’s proven but it didn’t happen. I’m not sure we’ll see much of Shelley in the playoffs but if we’re in a lead and things are getting tough then I can see Carcillo making an appearance.”

He says he’ll never play for the Cincinnati Bengals again and will retire if he’s forced to do so. Bengals owner Mike Brown says Palmer isn’t going anywhere.

Who will blink first?

Well, if Brown does decide to eventually blink, it looks like he’ll have a trade partner in the Miami Dolphins. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald writes that the Dolphins have Palmer atop their QB wishlist this offseason.

He writes that guys like Kevin Kolb, Vince Young, Donovan McNabb, Kyle Orton and Alex Smith (QB’s who would seem to be available) aren’t viewed very highly by the Dolphins brass.

“None of this is my opinion,” Salguero writes. “It’s the opinion of folks within the Miami organization who have done the work. This comes from folks who have watched the films or crunched the numbers or done the evaluations or talked to the men who did.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Palmer will even be available. But at least Brown should know that someone will fork over a second-round pick for him. I don’t know that for a fact, but the Dolphins always seem willing to turn in a second-round pick for a new quarterback.

He’d need to do something to keep him busy and keep the cash flowing in, but what? You mean like, say, play in the NBA?

“There’s not going to be any football,” Marshall predicted. “If there’s a lockout, I have to find a job. I figure the Nuggets will be a better choice because of the welcome home cheer I’ll get — a couple of boos at first. I’m gonna get with a basketball coach and get to work, prepare for the lockout.”

When he first heard the idea, head coach Tony Sparano threw water on it. “I’ve seen him jump — he’s not playing basketball,” Sparano said.

Well, after testing his basketball skills, it seems that Marshall doesn’t think he can play either.

“Marshall said that idea of trying to play in the NBA if there is a lockout is dead. Tried to play recently + realized he didn’t have it,” tweets Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post.

So there goes that. And people that think he’s ridiculous for even thinking that he could do it, have never watched professional athletes of his caliber up close. Sure, it’s extremely difficult to be a two-sport pro, but we wouldn’t have bet against Marshall until we actually saw him struggle on a basketball court.

However, there is another free agent whose departure could be far more damaging to the team.

That would be mammoth nose tackle Paul Soliai.

He is a 355-lb. lineman who can really clog the toilet in the middle of the defense. He had an excellent second half in 2010 and he wants to cash in. The Dolphins would be wise not to let him get away, but a source close to Soliai tells Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald that the team has “zero” chance of retaining his services.

That’s a big problem. The crux of the 3-4 is having that big nose tackle that can control the middle. And finding 350+ pound dudes that can actually play is not an easy chore.

However, Soliai was drafted in 2007 and this was his only really good year. So, we can understand the Dolphins being careful about breaking the bank on an over-sized human who could just spend all the money on cheesecake and completely go in the tank. We don’t know if you noticed or not, but fat people can be lazy.

Off the top of my head, the San Francisco 49ers could give Soliai’s phone a ringy ding if they don’t franchise Aubrayo Franklin. Regardless of who it is, there won’t be a shortage of teams looking for Soliai’s services, even if the dollar amount won’t be quite what he imagines.

Do not get involved with the coaching! Jesus, is it that hard to understand?

Per the Palm Beach Post, that is exactly what Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is doing. He said on a recent Finsiders radio show that he wants a more flashy offense that summons images of Dan Marino.

“I’ve told Tony [Sparano] that, to me, I want an aggressive, creative (offense), not playing just to keep it close,” Ross said on 940 AM. “A little bit more unpredictable, and opening it up. That’s what I think South Florida wants, and that’s what this climate demands.”

Photo Caption: “Don’t worry, Emilio. I’ve already talked to Tony. I told him to stop running a shitty offense and instead run one that’s fun to watch, scores tons of points and wins. He thanked me for the suggestion. Sometimes you just have to step in, you know?”

That’s what the climate demands? You serious?

“One great advantage in Florida as the Miami Dolphins, that other teams don’t have, and that’s we have the weather in August, September and October,” Ross added. “Our players are training in that weather, let’s take advantage of it. Let’s go with a hurry-up offense, let’s wear them down. We’ve never done that. This isn’t the north, where you want to just take it four yards and a cloud of dust. I think I look for a different brand. Seeing the Dolphins, how fans want to see them, how we win, we’re going downfield, the days of Dan Marino, the days we all want to go back to.”

This is all well and good, but you didn’t get Jim Harbaugh and you are stuck (essentially) with Tony Sparano. You do realize that Sparano is a run-first guy, right? If you wanted a high-flying offense, why don’t you hire someone else? So now, you’ll have a run-first coach and you’re going to make him try to be a flashy, throw the ball all around type of guy, which he’s not. This is a recipe for success!

Should we also note that the Dolphins don’t even have a quarterback on the roster that they like? Chad Henne is okay, but what’s his big problem?

He throws too many interceptions! So I have an idea! Let’s throw the ball more! We’ll utilize all the receivers we don’t have that can stretch the field! Guess which side of the ball most of our draft picks will be this year! Our new offense will be magnificent and glossy! We’ll literally give the ball away to opposing defenses! Here! Take it! No, seriously! Take this god-damned ball from us!

At 5-5, the Miami Dolphins are a measly three games back of the New York Jets and New England Patriots for the lead in the AFC East. We’re kidding, they are out of it. I mean, what does it take?

They have a stud left tackle named Jake Long that is dealing with a torn labrum that just isn’t going to get better by playing football. He got burned by Julius Peppers (not there is shame in that) for three sacks Thursday night and he can’t be feeling good.

A team source tells the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the team was so troubled by Long’s performance Thursday night, that they are considering shutting him down for the year. Another team source says that Long is insisting that he can play at a high level.

But, Long will need surgery to fix his labrum issues and he won’t be able to do much in the way of lifting for four months after getting cut open. We think the logical thing to do is just shut him down.

What’s going to happen? You’ll lose games? You are doing that right now. As it is you are down to your third-string quarterback. If you were in the playoff hunt, maybe you push the issue. But you aren’t making the playoffs in the uber-competitive AFC, so who cares? If replacement Lydon Murtha is worse and you lose a few extra games, you’ll get a better draft pick.

Why do teams have to screw around with this stuff. Shut him down.

We have been praying as hard as we can to have JaMarcus Russell get back in the NFL. We love him.

And it looks like our prayers could be answered. In a very odd game, the Miami Dolphins lost starter Chad Pennington and his replacement Chad Henne to injury. And reports are that both will be done for the season. That leaves the Dolphins with only Tyler Thigpen at QB.

So, they are going to have to hit the waiver wire, because many NFL experts think that one quarterback isn’t enough.

And according to Josina Anderson of Showtime and FOX 31 in Denver, the Dolphins have reached out to Russell’s people to kick his tires (just don’t spill his sizzurp).

Photo Caption: Someone just told JaMarcus that they were all out of sizzurp.

“Breaking: Sources: The Miami #Dolphins have contacted JaMarcus Russell’s camp to try and schedule a workout. #NFL,” she tweets.

The Dolphins have to do something at QB and the pickings will be slim. Hence, they are looking at Russell.

But now, it has become a reality.

Pennington is the new starting QB and Henne has been sent to the pine.

“This is not an indictment on Chad Henne, not an indictment on his future,” Sparano said, per Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “At this particular time this is something I feel I need to do.”

Sparano mentioned that Henne “was disappointed, as I would expect, but a tremendous professional.”

I actually thought Henne was doing a decent job, but apparently my opinion doesn’t count when it comes to football matters in South Florida.

We seem to hear a lot of mouth from the Miami Dolphins LB, but we rarely hear about his play on the field. He appears to be all talk, and Derrick Mason would agree.

What is clear is that he doesn’t come off as extremely intelligent, and this must make the dean at the University of Florida very proud. While trying to make the point that Baltimore Ravens FB Le’Ron McClain spit on him during their loss on Sunday, he kind of screws up his history.

“They didn’t see Chad Henne get hit twice when he slid. Yeah, a little Stevie Wonder and Anne Frank,” Crowder said, referencing a girl who hid in an attic in Holland during WWII.

“Who was that? Is that the blind girl? Helen Keller . . . I don’t know who the f— Anne Frank is. I’m mad right now. F— it. I’m not as swift as I usually am.”

Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post says that the latest on Odrick is that he has a busted foot opposite the broken leg.

“Odrick broke a bone in his left foot, Sparano said, and will be out “for a long time,” Volin tweets.

The big defensive lineman was previously considered out for the year by Jason La Canfora of NFL Network. However, Tony Sparano refused to go so far as to say that his season is officially done.

This is pure speculation, but a broken bone in one foot and a hairline fracture in the opposite fibula doesn’t sound so good. We wouldn’t expect to see Odrick on a football field for a very long time.

It is a very wild, wild week in the NFL this weekend and there is a lot to discuss. Why is it so wild? I have no clue. I just thought that if I said that, you’d just nod and agree without really thinking about the statement.

I know you’ve been waiting anxiously to find out who will win this week. So, instead of waiting for Sunday afternoon to see the actual scores, I’ll just tell you ahead of time. See how easy this is?

San Diego Chargers (-8.5) at St. Louis Rams

Many worried about the potential for a lot of interceptions and overall mix ups in this game due to the fact that both teams have blue and yellowish colors. Not to mention their helmet designs are similar. Will Sam Bradford be able to recognize the differences in uniforms and throw the ball to the right team? Only time will tell, but it’s a valid concern.

A bigger concern is one that we mentioned last week. Missouri politics are a mess right now, and the race for Senate is hotter than ever. In a Friday night debate with Democrat Robin “The Steel Carp” Carnahan, Republican candidate Roy Blunt showed where he got his name by lambasting Barack Obama’s stimulus plan.

“I thought the stimulus package was a huge mistake,” Blunt said. “It was a waste of money. But it had a huge effect on Secretary of State Carnahan’s brother’s wind farm.”

Uhhh ohhhhhhh! No he dii’n't! No he dii’n't!

Is this true? Did this really help the brother of Carnahan? Not only do I not know the answer to that question, the Rams offensive line doesn’t either. While some o-line’s struggle with consistency, the Rams front five is in the midst of a huge political debate. “Why would I help you double team Shaun Phillips when you would criticize Carnahan’s brother for creating jobs in Missouri?” type of thing.

Tempers are flaring in the St. Louis locker room over the Senatorial race and that means big pressure on Bradford. Pressure from the defense, pressure to win the game, and pressure to make the right choice on November 2nd.

Chargers 28, Rams 13

New Orleans Saints (-4) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Speaking of pressure, do you have any idea how steamy things will get if somehow you end up betting $500 on Tampa Bay because you like their helmets? I’ve seen it happen. Rerun’s cousin Ike may have been the first to attempt this, but it’s an epidemic that has gone on for too long. Here is the bottom line when gambling: If that $500 was set aside for you and your wife to go on vacation, then you can’t put it on the Buccaneers.

But that’s not really what we are talking about here, is it? Many websites don’t like to get hardcore when making picks, and we can understand why. It’s easy to look at tertiary things like running backs, quarterbacks, linebackers, and hell, even wide receivers sometimes. What’s more difficult is to look inside the locker room and really see what’s going on with a team.

And for the Bucs, they are playing with heavy hearts after seeing the local baseball team take a huge dump in the ALDS. Aqib Talib, for one, is sick of the endless bitchy status updates by Evan Longoria on Facebook. It’s not even that they are overt complaints about what happened in their loss to the Rangers in five games. It’s the cryptic kind that are just begging for someone to reach and be like “hey what happened.” It is beyond annoying when people do this. Here are a few:

-”Somedays it’s just…..wow.”

-”It’s complicated.”

-”Sighs the sigh of all sighs.”

-”Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea. All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see”

Talib was patient, but the “Dust in the Wind” lyrics really set him off. It got to the point where Talib almost unfriended him on Facebook. Talib hates a lot of things. Pushy cab drivers, quarterbacks who try to look him off, and people who copy and paste random song lyrics as their Facebook status.

The big question this week is whether or not he can let this all go and focus on shutting down Drew Brees and the Saints offense. The Saints are coming off an exciting loss to the Arizona Cardinals, so they are going to be tough to beat.

Saints 20, Bucs 21

Kansas City Chiefs at Houston Texans (-4.5)

Oooohhh, isn’t this juicy? The inconsistent Texans by 4.5? I’ve got a lot of things on my mind right now, and upset is one them. Remember we told you yesterday about stud-in-the-making Brandon Flowers from the Chiefs? He’s going to mix it up with the best wide receiver in football, Andre Johnson, who says he’ll play this week.

The Chiefs are much improved, even if their quarterback is about as talented as a kid that comes in eighth place in a 20-yard run at fat camp. I love their running game with the explosive Jamaal Charles, the youthfully exuberant and impish Dexter McCluster, and the cunningly succinct Thomas Jones.

The Texans just haven’t shown that they can dominate week in and week out in this league. In other leagues, yes they have. In the NFL? No. The Chiefs are going to win this one outright.

Chiefs, 24, Texans 17

Miami Dolphins at Green Bay Packers (-3)

How lucky are the Miami Dolphins this week? Not only do they have their away game at Green Bay at a time of year where they won’t completely freeze their fins off (get it?), they’ll also have their Friday and Saturday nights completely free should their son or daughter wish to go to the mall.

Doesn’t make sense? It should.

Starting this week, the Aventura Mall is requiring any teen under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent – or legal guardian (so if this happened when Adonal Foyle was under 18, one of those Colgate professors would qualify) – at all times after 9:30pm.

Photo Caption: It’s going to be a LOT tougher to snag something like this in a Miami-area mall after 9:30 PM now.

This is great if you are a mall goer wanting a calmer, safer place to go when you need to get a sex party game at Spencer’s Gifts. But not if you are a Dolphin player trying to prepare for a game, when you’ve got this little 11-year old bastard who has to go buy that special rock album and t-shirt he wants so damn much.

So, with a sense of relief, the Dolphins go out and cover the spread.

Dolphins 23, Packers 24

Despite relentless efforts to turn her, I’m pretty confident she would rather watch QVC, infomercials or play Call of Duty Modern Warfare. rather than spend time watching a good old athletic competition. Albeit, a girl who wants to play C.O.D. is reason enough to turn a girlfriend into a wife…I still lose sleep over the fact that I am failing in my efforts to secure a sports driven household!

However, to my surprise, the Philadelphia Flyers playoff run sparked something in her that I was not expecting. I was focusing on the Eagles and Phillies when low and behold something on the ice captivated her. Overnight she had become a fan of the orange and black! In fact, I even heard her watching a few games upstairs, on her own accord, when I was tucked away in the man room. In watching the games, she hand-picked her favorite: Michael Leighton. I had to tell her, “Babe, he’s a good goalie…but the defense is helping out here. What about Giroux or Richards?”

Nope… she had it in her head that she was a fan of man between the pipes. Leighton was her guy. No matter what I did or argument of reason I made, I couldn’t convince her otherwise. What is my point? She likes a guy with a bigger stick. That, and the fact that sometimes girls will like a team or a player for reasons unknown. Maybe they like the colors. Maybe she likes how his ass looks in tight pants. Maybe she likes the mascot? Typically, this is all irrelevant to the world of sports. But not today… not in Week 4 of the NFL. Dare I say, this is the week of the mascots!

Photo Caption: Will JA pick Week 5 games based on who’s kicker he thinks is better at online Call of Duty?

Panthers vs Saints
At first glance, this is a no brainer. A panther vs a Saint? The average length of an adult panther is equal or greater to that of an adult male. So unless this “saint” is rocking a mouth full of True Blood and finger nails that will make a coke head jealous, I just don’t know how it is a fair fight. After the panther takes a bite at the last supper, the only thing praying will do is help ensure he’s off to a better place. But wait, what about St. Francis of Assisi? He is the patron saint of animals! This good ole’ saint will have Mr. Panther lying at his feet and sharing little wafers while convincing him that “this really is the lord’s body.” Sure it is. And he’s just your altar boy. Too far?

Advantage Saints.

Bears vs Giants
We all know the damage a bear can do. If you don’t, go rent “The Great Outdoors” and try the Old 96’er while you’re at it. But seriously, what part of bear doesn’t say, “get the hell inside?” And for the record, I have yet to see a bear “hug” someone without taking half of his face with him. So the term “bear hug” is really misleading. But not as misleading as the Giants. Giants? Giant what? I need to know what it is that I’m going to battle against. Is it a giant scorpion? A giant centipede? (I hate those things!) What about a giant komodo dragon? That might scare me just a bit. But to simply say a giant leaves much to be desired. Like when you meet someone on the internet…then meet them in person and realize they really just posted a really…REALLY… misleading picture of themselves. What if it is a giant cotton ball? I’m pretty confident the bear will destroy, eat and defecate the cotton ball…then use the remainder to wipe his bald behind… again, go see The Great Outdoors.

Advantage Bears

Patriots vs Dolphins
This one is a tough one. On one hand you have American pride. The red, white and blue riding on horseback with lanterns and bag full of gun powder. “One if by land, two if by sea.” Well guess what New England… Miami is holding up two lanterns and I’m not so sure your muskets are accurate in the deep blue. Make no mistake about it, Dolphins are no joke. Sure, they’re fun to go swimming with and who doesn’t love Heinz Getwellvet in his relentless pursuit of Snowflake? The truth of the matter is that these bad boys are stone cold killers. Ask the great white shark who gets bullied by these aquatic athletes. Dolphins have been known to kill for reasons other than hunger. Maybe they’re just bored. Hell, I get bored after swimming for 10 minutes.

Advantage Dolphins

Redskins vs Eagles
Don’t know about you, but I’ve never gone into a fight saying, “this guy is pretty tough….do you see his tan?” Just because he has a darker pigment and a spear doesn’t mean he is a worthy opponent. C’mon Washington… give me something more. If you’re the Indians and least I can associate that with a good scalping. Who wants to deal with that? From what I hear, that’s something not even a good dose of Rogaine can replace. But you’re not…you’re simply, “The Redskins.” I’ll associate that with my uncle who stays out in the sun too long and maybe had one too many to drink. Maybe Jersey Shore has it wrong. GTL doesn’t stand for Gym Tan Laundry as much as it stands for Game Tan Lose. At least the Eagles have the ability to attack from the air. In addition, they have some serious talons. And they’re on the endangered species list…so while some will say “they obviously can’t be too dangerous if enough of them have been killed,” I say it makes them that much more unpredictable! You never see those big dudes flying around attacking…so we have no idea what they’re capable of. I would freak out if a humming bird started swooping down and going for my eyes…let alone this guy with 4” talons. You kiddin’ me?

Advantage Eagles

The Jets are getting thin at that outside linebacker spot. And I’d say that Brandon Marshall is headed for a big day with Revis out, but Kyle Wilson and Antonio Cromartie are hardly chump change.

And when we say he struggled a bit, we mean that he stunk up the joint.

He was drafted by the Dolphins mainly because they thought he could be the ultimate Wildcat weapon. They got drunk on his physical abilities, but they never translated to being a somewhat functional NFL quarterback.

So after a bad 2009 rookie year and a relatively miserable offseason, the Dolphins decided to cut the cord on White and just move on.

And a league source tells ProFootballTalk.com that the Dolphins aren’t the only team that isn’t interested in having White on their roster. It seems that no team is even kicking his tires. No visits are lined up, he doesn’t have any offers, no nothing. And he isn’t eligible for the practice squad because he appeared in 13 games last year.

So what is next for White? He’s been drafted four different times in baseball, so maybe he takes a look at that. He’s clearly a superior athlete, so that might be an option.

But, that said, this is quite a stunning fall from being the 44th-overall pick in 2009.

We still can’t see him never getting a chance in the NFL again, that’s kind of absurd. And a source tells PFT essentially the same thing.

“I’d be surprised if he wasn’t in the league at some point,” a source said.

Whether he was slipping on a McDonald’s bag and hurting himself, or acting like a petulant child over his contract status, it always seemed like it was something.

But, Marshall got his wish and he’s now with the Miami Dolphins with a shiny new contract. But, according to a report from Omar Kelly in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, he could be showing signs of acting up already.

After dropping a couple of passes in practice, Marshall got frustrated with himself. So after he caught a nice pass from Chad Henne for a touchdown, he decided it would be appropriate to punt the football. This wouldn’t be a huge deal if it wasn’t exactly what he did in Denver to let everyone know he wasn’t happy with his contract.

We aren’t suggesting that he’s doing this for more money. We just think it shows a bit of rogue behavior that the coaches might not appreciate. It can be perceived as the attitude of a 14-year old cocaine user on “The Montell Williams Show,” who says “I do what I want! You don’t know me! Sit down! You don’t know me! I do what I want!”

Of course, it could be a bit overblown, who knows? We’ll all find out together if/when he pops off the next time.

He was taken 32nd-overall (Patriots had their first rounder taken from them for spying) and has delivered a whopping 3.5 sacks since then.

And this offseason hasn’t produced much better results. He’s already allegedly committed felony assault by striking his pregnant girlfriend. Now, a league source tells ProFootballTalk.com that Merling has injured his Achilles tendon.

Photo Caption: Merling makes a big stop on Tampa Bay’s Cadillac Williams.

And the source isn’t exactly sure how it happened. It could have happened while working out and preparing for the 2010 season. But, it also could be non-football related.

If it’s the latter, then Merling is in trouble. The Dolphins could owe him none of his $600,000 salary for the year.

While we don’t know the extent of the injury, Achilles problems tend to be the “done for the year” variety. But of course we’re just speculating.
